Ibuprofen Impact on PSA

Having PSA checked next week as part of my AS. Also been taking Advil for a shoulder issue. Wondering is anyone has an idea of it's impact on PSA. The interwebs tell me it may contribute to a PSA decrease due to inflammation reduction. Any opinions on this?

That would be a new one to me. Not something my doctors ever mentioned.

I have seen others here recommend it before a PSA test. I started doing it for my last test. I take 400mg of Advil 3x a day for 3 weeks prior. Not sure it helps and I am mindful that it can cause stomach bleeding and for older people, higher risk of stroke.

My RO prescribes an antibiotic for PSA 2.0 over nadir and then retests PSA in a month to try and eliminate prostatitis as the cause. He knows most cases of prostatitis are not caused by bacteria but inflammation even though an antibiotic will sometimes help, but he also has his patients take 1200 mg of Advil the last week of the antibiotic.

My PC doc was opposed to the idea. He said what are you going to do, take Advil every time you have the test?

This study shows that long term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's) does effect PSA but only by 1% at 1 year usage and 6% at 5 year usage, so short term use of NSAID's would not seem to be clinically significant. Statins and thiazides have a more significant effect on PSA, especially in combination, up to 36% with long-term use (5 years)

Watch your kidney functions when taking Ibuprofen. I was taking it for years and my kidney functions are borderline; Doc says no more Ibuprofen, but Tylenol is OK.

Why would you take something that might mask your PSA?

I have a history of prostatitis and we all know that can raise PSA levels temporarily. Most cases of prostatitis are caused by inflammation. Some studies have shown NSAID’s may reduce inflammation. I take it for a short time prior to the PSA test not to “mask” my PSA but to try my best to get a true reading. Do you think men who avoid sex for 48 hours before the test are “masking’ their PSA?

- hrpufnstuf, I agree that one would want the PSA reading to be more reflective of what the cancer is putting out rather than other extraneous factors like ejaculation, bike riding, or prostatitis. But then again if ibuprofen does have an effect, it would confound the long term PSA data unless the same Advil regimen was used every time. But apparently the data shows it has little effect anyways...

Look, hrpufnstuf...ibuprofen, if anything, lowers (or "masks") PSA.

Ejaculation results in a short term surge in PSA.

Opposite effects.

Get it?
