OK, first off, welcome to our club none of us chose. Second, I assume as active duty military you're in the military medical system. Correct?
At your age and stage...and yes, you are low-intermediate risk, which is a really good thing.
Let me tell you a few things we tell all the newcomers:
1. If possible, ask to have your biopsy slides sent off to Johns Hopkins for second opinion.
2. You are also a candidate for radiation therapy, and there are several flavors, if you will. Please look into them. I don't know how the military system works, but I know there are top docs in your system.
3. All of the standard therapies are curative at your stage. You owe it to yourself to decide what side effects you're willing to risk.
4. Urologists are surgeons, so they suggest surgery. They don't usually recommend radiation because, well, that's not their thing.
5. You don't need to be treated next week or even next month. You have time to make a truly informed decision.
Last, but not least, hang around, listen (read), there is a lot of help here. You'll be fine, and you need to make the right decision for you and your family. Surgery is not the only option you have. (and I say that as surgery guy who had a great outcome)
