Just a follow up on my hernia surgery nearly four years after my RALP The surgery was done under local with sedation. Next to a prostatectomy it was a piece of cake. The surgery was done out patient at 1:30 pm and I was home by 4:30pm. I have some discomfort but Percocet covers it. I intend to switch over to NSAIDs and Tylenol tomorrow.
The surgeon discovered that I actually had two hernias. This may have been because I have had two laparoscopic procedures, an appendectomy and a prostatectomy. The literature says that up to 25% of patients who have laparoscopic procedures will eventually develop a hernia. So there you go!
For me the take away is that I would much rather have a surgical procedure with no consequential pathology report at the end.
Two care, Scott

Was your hernia repair laparoscopic? I'm up for bilateral repair.

No, I had an
open repair. Th surgeon made a point that I needed a repair because of two previous laparoscopic procedures so why make four new possible hernia problems. Secondly,
open hernia repairs with mesh are slightly more successful.

Glad to hear, I have an umbical hernia that's come up after my RALP last December. No pain, just looks funny, why did you wait 4 years? I may do the same, tired of doctors mainly.

Hi
I did not wait four years. I only noticed "the bulge' about
4 months ago. I showed the hernia to my urologist who told me to take care of it. It will only get bigger. So I took care of it. Not nearly the pain I had after the prostatectomy but it is more sore if you know what I mean.

Great to hear and thanks for sharing the experience. I still have pain but no bulge around the main incision site and still wondering if it's a hernia or post RALP pain ( I'm 10 weeks out of surgery - feels like ages)

It all takes time. No wonder they call us the "patient."
