PSA continue to rise...

PSA is continuously rising and has reached 27. Patient is asymptomatic with good health. Doctor advised for bone scan and advised if there are bony mets at some particular site radiation therapy will be given and will start some estrogen treatment. At high PSA 27 i have no idea of how distant disease might have spread.Very depressed sad
Diagnosed prostate cancer 2014
Bone scan clear
Initial PSA 8
Radical prostactomy august 2014
PSA after 3 months 5.0
Bone scan showed one met in rib and one at lower back.
Started hormone therapy zolodox and casodex january 2015
PSA jan 2016 0.4ng/ml
stopped casodex
Bone scan showed lesion at sacral ala and lower rib
PSA april 2016 4.5
started taxotere
PSA after 3rd cycle 1.5
PSA after 6th cycle 0.6
PSA after 21 days of 8th cycle 0.4
After one month PSA 2.8
Started Abritrone acetate
PSA after 3 months 5.9
Zolodox changed to Firmagon
PSA after 3 months 15
started Antiandrogen Cyprotene acetate
PSA after 15days 18

Why not do another round of chemo? You can keep doing it until it stops working, and it worked very well last time. Metastases always spread - it's what they do cry

Yes, chemo is definitely an option but my father gets so so depressed on the name of chemotherapy. My oncologist said that patient is quite well and we should wait for couple of month for chemo till then we can try for alternative medicines like estrogen or radiation (if some bone hot spots). He is on prednsilone+firmagon+denmosumab+ cyprotene acetate. Does estrogen treatment helps???

Hi jannett. So sorry to hear your father having difficulties.

He is fighting a Gleason 9 case, which can be rather aggressive. Treatments need to be similarly aggressive, commonly attacked with multiple simultaneous treatments. It sounds like he has been doing a lot to fight this disease.

Some of the more knowledgeable here can comment about estrogen. I've normally heard of it used as a way to fight side effects from the main treatments of testosterone suppression (hormone therapy). Estrogen can help reduce hot flashes, and may also help bone strength (that's what the denosumab is for that he's on, too). Does he have osteoporosis? Sometimes that can develop from the hormone therapy.

I've added you to the G9 Crew, under the 4+5 group by the 8/2014 diagnosis date; it seems I missed your earlier posts. You can find some information, some support there. If you look at that roster, you can find many G9 cases, most still doing pretty well. That's the point of that thread, a gathering place for those of us facing this situation and some of our specific concerns.

Estrogen patches seem to work very well in some men, not in others. The only way to know is to try it. He may want to ask his doctor about taking 10 mg of tamoxifen with it to prevent breast tenderness. He also will have to be watched for blood clots - less so with the patch, more so with estrogen pills.
