It would be great to hear some definitive proof on this topic. The only real diet that has ever worked for me was a very self-gratifying 52 pound loss on the Atkins diet. Since PC and the elimination of most dairy and meat I have gained all 52 back plus. I have seen the diary and meat thing go back and forth but sugar remains steady as a potential breeding ground for cancer. Grass fed beef with no GMOs, eggs fortified with Omega 6, and dairy alternatives are all OKd in Cancer nutritional book given to me by the late Dr. Peter Grimm. Unfortunately, Dr. Grimm suffered from heart problems. The dilemma continues????
I can relate. I struggle with the same conflicts with what is supposed to work- for weight, over all health and/or cancers- vs what I have seen work repeatedly regarding my weight, BP, most lab values, etc. Only one version or another of Atkins- common denom low carb- seems to consistently work on those things I can measure that are reputed to be important. But whether or not those are helpful or harmful to my PC status is so far unknown to me. The studies TA has linked to here, as well as 1 I recently started a thread about
which showed more dietary fat = longer life when just considering all cause death rates- seem to give hope that my meat eating is at worst neutral in the PC fight.
And along with your mention of sugar, I recently posted a thread or two with studies pointing to the insuln that sugar/carbs cause your body to dump as being a major, MAJOR player in the case of PC, as well as other cancers. People showed zero interest in that thread or hypothesis. But personally, that seems to be more evidence that whatever I do to generate unopposed insulin production is probably not a good thing. (this would also relate to the metformin theories, which takes a drug approach to increasing insulin sensitivity which should then lead to lowe blood insulin levels, but I don't know how much). While it is true that protein also leads to insulin production, it also generates glucagon which counters insulin(called the insulin/glucagon axis). While fat generates about
zero insulin, and net carbs = a bunch of insulin.
So, Atkins or any lower carb shoud = lower insulin, while higher insulin has been associated with as much as 8 times more PC risk.
eight times Even double would be noteworthy, seems to me. Hence the big study recently(another thread) showing high fat = lower mortality, higher carb= higher mortality, all cause? Maybe. But it certainly does seem, based on TA's links, that no one has been able to prove a link with red meat, even processed, and PC. Eggs may still be up for debate. As well as chicken, with one Harvard study showing both eggs and chicken to significantly increase chance of BCR, while another study showed no problem for chicken, while another showed chicken to be protective.
But I should add that, IMO, a vegan or even a vegetarian diet, depending on whether it was mostly vegetable rather than mostly bread and pasta, could also end up being a low net carb diet, and if so would also be low insulin. But if it was mostly pasta and desserts, it could instead be a high carb, high insulin, diet.
