4 year anniversary - Just another milestone and Happy Thanksgiving.

Four years ago today I was diagnosed as G8 with multiple bone mets. Some crying that day, and then some crying when my wife started reading about survivability projections. Lupron has become my second life partner. Had a three year relationship with bicalutamide, and am getting ready to start my second year of hopefully a long relationship with Zytiga. Took part in SWOG 1214 evaluating TAK-700 and ADT vs. Casodex and ADT. Hoping my involvement helps someone down the line.

If you have read my previous posts, I am moving forward counting my milestones. Some others are counting their bottles of zytiga (ISU - I have a row of finished bottles also in my man cave, hope you do not mind), and many of you provide relevant information to newbies, or thoughtful encouragement.

With today being 4 years, tomorrow my 59th birthday, and Thursday being thanksgiving, I just want to thank each and everyone of you - you each have personally touched me. Not only does the positive energy flow directly to me and others who read this, if flows to those who I encourage several times a year to have their PSA checked, and avoid this ride.

Good on you for volunteering for that trial. I know Zytiga will be helping you in your battle. Praying for no side effects ,like my experience. I am 36 months undetectable, adding another empty bottle to my collection today! Your journey is somewhat similar to mine, I am three years older in age and 5 years out from diagnosis.

This is the month marking 4 years since my original diagnosis, too.

Life is Good.

(I had to chuckle. I have about a year's worth of empty Xtandi bottles lined-up, myself.)

Hello KMCLARK1,

It's great to read your post!

I want to express my thanks to you and others who have taken the time to enroll in clinical studies and clinical trials. It is a debt that none of us can repay, because those are the steps that lead to breakthroughs and new findings for the future.

Many advancements have been made in the treatment of prostate cancer in the past decade. Each step forward has helped thousands of fellows --- the emergence of XOFIGO, ZYTIGA, XTANDI, PROVENGE ... and new formulations of chemotherapy infusions that are more specifically mixed now for individual patients.

We learn new things from the research ... but our doctors learn new things from us, as well ... finding out potential side effects ... the maximum potential of these new breakthrough medications ... the sequencing of these medications ... and combining these treatments in new ways to help each patient.

When I was growing up, my grandfather passed away in the 1970s from advanced prostate cancer ... he was diagnosed in the fall ... we had one last Christmas with him ... and he passed away before the arrival of spring. I visited him every single day ... he did not survive very long after he was diagnosed.

Looking back now, I realize that nothing was offered to him, in terms of treatment options ... chemotherapy for prostate cancer had not emerged ... there were no LUPRON or FIRMAGON or ZOLADEX shots given in those days ... in Grandpa's medicine cabinet, there were no bottles of XTANDI or ZYTIGA pills ... I wish there had been.

I realize now, in retrospect, that his doctors didn't really have anything to offer him, in terms of treatments ... historically, I have read that this was a time period in which researchers were hoping to come up with some new answers for prostate cancer ... and breakthroughs were elusive. Working away in the research laboratories, those scientists must have been racing against the clock, hoping to find SOMETHING that would help all those fellows during that time period.

I'm hoping we see even more breakthroughs in the near future ... new approaches ... medications that can work even longer or more effectively ... or treatments that can be combined in new ways for an even better result.

Yes, I'm still saving my ZYTIGA bottles, just as you are ... as a way to chart my own progress ... and to encourage other friends of mine, who are just starting new medications. I just picked up bottle # 29 of ZYTIGA this past week.

I want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for participating in the recent medical study to benefit others!
