Hello
My husband's Doctor request from him
To do Flourscopy exam next week after
Prostate removed (prostate cancer).
What is the reason for this exam?
How much radiation it used compare to CT?
Is there any substitute to this test?

I just asked but didn't get a respond.
I think he was talking about Fluoroscopy Sytogram.
Why it's preform after Prosctomy?
Is it medical neccery and why?

I think you’re talking about a cystogram before the Foley catheter is removed. The purpose is to make sure that the anastomosis — the connection by suture — between the bladder and the urethra (where the prostate used to be) has sufficiently healed so that no urine is leaking out.

Yes, I believe Saipan is correct. This test is standard before the removal of the catheter and generates no more radiation than any other X-ray. It’s painless and will take around 30 minutes (at least mine did). They will take a couple of X-rays with the bladder empty, then fill it with a contrast agent through the catheter and take a few more. The doctor will view the X-rays and if all looks good the Foley will be removed.

Maybe not necessary if you don't want it? I did not have it.
Found this conclusion:
"The results of our study suggest that in usual circumstances, urinary catheter can be safely removed on the 7th postoperative day after RARP without a routine cystography. Selective use of check cystogram can be done in cases where bladder neck reconstruction is performed or those who have a history of TURP with wide bladder neck and when an intraoperative leak noted on the bladder fill test."

I didn't have that imaging done either, I pulled my catheter out about day 9 or 10.

Yes, it involves use of a radioactive contrast medium. Best to ask your doctor how much radiation is involved.

Fluoroscopy is a medical imaging technique that uses x-rays to produce a real time moving image of a body structure. It is often used to accurately place needles for procedures and to track the progression of contrast through a body structure or system, like the urinary tract. I believe that the contrast media used for cystography is iodine based. It is not radioactive. Often the fluoroscopic procedure will be pulsed to reduce radiation exposure. You can think of fluoroscopy as an x-Ray movie as opposed to a typical x-ray still picture.

He has his reasons for wanting the test. I had two. Each lasted 10 mins. Completely pain free. He'll have his cath out soon.

Some doctors do this, some do not. I didn't have one. Maybe it's based on the individual case and the surgeon's notes from the actual surgery. Either way, it's a tool they use to confirm whether the surgical repair of the urethra is complete before they pull the foley. It's not a bad idea, and it's not harmful. There are guys in here who developed internal leaks after the foley was pulled--and THAT is a really, really bad thing. You don't want that to happen, so this check is good insurance.

My doctor didn’t give me an option, but I guess I could have refused it if I really didn’t want it. Mine was only one week after surgery though and I felt better knowing that things had healed enough before removing the catheter.
