Ray Thomas, vocalist with the Moody Blues Band, has died of prostate cancer at age 76 in Surrey, England. He was diagnosed in 2014.

Sunbird, I've known this and didn't think to post this information here. I am a regular on the Moody Blues Facebook page. It is important this information gets out there. When a well known person or celebrity dies of a specific illness, word should get out to all, so testing will be done.

The Moody Blues will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April. I think it would be a good way to get the word out about Prostate testing. As a Founding Member, I will contact them. Thank you!

Thank you for posting this. Certainly everyone who was alive in the sixties knows and loves dozens of Moody Blues songs. They were a truly revolutionary group, right up there with the Beatles and Stones (and a good deal more enjoyable to listen to IMO).

So many of the iconic rock stars from the sixties and early seventies have fallen lately, most of them only a few years older than many of us here. It is indeed sad to witness their passing, as we consider ourselves fortunate to still be here.

It's always sad to hear of the loss of a rock music star from the past.

Here's Ray and the MBs performing back then in the mid-60's. They're playing "Nights in White Satin," perhaps their best-known song. Ray is playing the flute.

Its hard to watch videos of these guys in their prime, and then wrap your mind around the fact that they are dead.
I must have watched 50 videos of a young Greg Allman since he died, and another 50 or more of early Glen Frey/Eagles since Glenn died. Just hard to understand. Its nothing more than the ebb and flow of life. But its depressing to think about.

I liked the Moody Blues. Ray Thomas was terrific. RIP

I just saw the Moody Blues performing last summer at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts outside of Washington DC. They have played there several times during the past ten years.

Sunbird - Where are you guys getting this? Every press report states "he died suddenly and no cause of death was given or confirmed." There has not been a confirmed cause of death yet or even a speculative one.

Again, where did you read it was confirmed as "prostate cancer?"

This helps show the public that prostate cancer is indeed controllable when caught at an early stage.

It is true...This is from his website posted in 2013

Thomas retired from the Moody Blues in 2002 after suffering from a series of health issues. In 2013, Thomas revealed that he was suffering from "in-operable" prostate cancer. "The cancer is being held in remission but I'll be receiving this treatment for the rest of my life," Thomas wrote on his website.

Yea, it is true he had PCA....I didn't say he didn't....Nothing has said PCA was the cause of death. It's a little pre-mature to be making this assumption yet....

Regardless of why and how he died. He was an amazing musician and a Battle Brother and is a huge loss to the world of Prog Rock.

These notable prostate cancer deaths include modern and past famous men and women, from politicians to religious leaders to writers. Everyone on this list has has prostate cancer as a cause of death somewhere in their public records...

I suppose this is to include M->F transgenders?

No, I think it's just sloppy cut-and-paste. I took the URL and replaced "prostate" with "lung" and found an identical looking page with the same wording...of course the individual names were different.

The identical breast cancer site also says "famous men and women," but breast cancer is possible in men, albeit very rare. No famous men were listed at the breast cancer site. Prostate cancer is not possible in a woman.

The Moody Blues was an all time favorite of mine. I read of Ray's death in this morning's paper.

I was aware Ray wasn't touring anymore, but not that he was suffering from PC.

Sad. He was too young.

i have really been enjoying sxm radio channel 30 the eagles channel listened all the way down to the mayo today a lot of history of the eagles and a lot of info on Glen Fry what a shame he passed away so young!

Another one to the list.
Rick Hall owner and founder of Fame recording studios in Muscle Shoals Al, died last week of because of PCa. He was buried Friday. He recorded the likes of Clarence Carter, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard and many, many others. Greg Alman's last album was recorded at Fame. There is a great documentary about the Muscle Shoals music on Netflix right now or you can google Muscle Shoals the movie and see a trailer Or just google Rick Hall. He was such a pioneer when he started the business in the 60's, when segeration was at its peak he was recording black artists with white musicians in Alabama. He chose alternative treatment that in the end didn't work out.

Greg Allman's name has been mentioned a couple of times, great rocker that he was with his group, the Allman Brothers.

Maybe it's getting a little bit away from this thread about Ray Thomas and the Moody Blues, but I just happened to watch this video of Greg and the Allman Brothers a short while ago, and was again impressed, as I always have been, with his talent, and that of the group.

I don’t believe he died of PCa, but he is gone, another loss from the ranks of the great rockers.

(One reason I decided to post this video is, interestingly, because of the sentiment conveyed by this song, one of change and separation, as in dying and leaving).
