Hello,
Im 40 yo with no hisyory of prostate cancer in my family. Got a call today that my PSA is 8.9 and was set up with urology. This has me very disturbed for it to be that high at my age. Quick bit about me; I am not sexually active. I'm not that fit but am extremely physically active 3 days a week. I have had the feeling of my bladder not emptying completely for over 4 years. Just seemed it was from me getting older. I do leak or have seepage of yellowish brown semen when I #2. This has been going on for about 2 years. Otherwise I feel fine, no pains or aches except the occassional crickets from various movements. And yea, I am flipping out about this! 40 years old with a PSA at 8.9. Urology appt on monday morning, 3 days away. What coupd possibly cause it to be this high??

Hello Jrich and welcome. I understand your concern but your symptoms do not sound like prostate cancer. More likely you have BPH and/or an infection. Try to relax as much as possible over the weekend and of course seeing the urologist is the right thing to do.

Enlarged prostate (BPH) is top of my list. A visit to the URO is in order. You'll get a DRE (digital rectal exam) and possibly some other tests. Infection is also a possibility.

Since you're posting on a PC site I'll say this: PSA is not a test for cancer. It simply indicates prostate activity and size. PC generally has no symptoms in the early stages or at the PSA you mention.

BPH, prostatitis, are much more likely in your case. Generally you don't consider PC until you've ruled out all other causes.

What you have is a really good reason to see a URO and get some more testing. There are meds for the BPH and the lack of emptying.

So, get the appointment, get checked out, and even if the worst is true, there are plenty of treatments available so this will just be a bump in the road of life. 30 years from now you'll be telling stories about this.

Not sure if it makes you feel any better, but my husband (also age 40) has a high PSA, and we are just in the beginning stages of figuring it all out. I understand your feelings, and what brings you to this forum. Where are you located? My husband has had several PSA tests since his initial PSA test 5 months ago, and has been on several different antibiotics. His PSA has gone from 5.34, to 7.98, to 6.71....all since August 2017.

Im 40 with PCa and had similar symptom of minor incomplete bladder. My PSA was high at 37 years old and I ignored doctor advice to get a biopsy for over two years because of my age and ignorance on the subject. Yours may very well be simply an infection that subsides with antibiotics or something. But I wouldn't put it off since further testing is the only way to know. No sense in giving it a head start on trying to spread if it turns out to be pca.
