AUS surgery after radiation

From what I've read the main effect that radiation has on subsequent surgery for incontinence is to make the surgery less likely to be totally effective. The radiation causes the tissues of the urethra near the urinary sphincter to become stiffer and more difficult to manipulate. This makes "sling" surgery much less likely to work since it is difficult to pull the stiffened urethra around to a better position. AUS surgery works better than slings for men who have had radiation but it is successful for a lower percentage of men who have had radiation than for men who have not.

This is consistent with my experience. I had an AUS installed after RP and radiation and, while it helps a lot, I still leak, just much less than before.

All that said you have every reason to be hopeful about your surgery next month. Even for men who have had radiation the odds of getting dry (no pad, or one pad a day just to be safe) are better than even money. And the chances that the AUS will at least greatly improve your leaking are between 80 and 90 percent.
