Elevated PSA of 3.8. 43 years old

So my father had PC at a younger age (51). My Dr started doing DRE and PSA tests at 40. My PSA at 40 was 2.1. At 41 it was 1.9, 42 is was 2.2 and this year at 43 it was 3.8. Each year a DRE was performed. All of which were and I quote, small, no lumps or abnormal findings. He put me on Cipro for 14 days. This didnt lower the PSA. I dont recall any symptoms. Heavy urine streams, Sex is fine, erections fine, I do routinely ride bike, and have had Prostatitis dx twice in the past which cleared with Antibiotics.

Next Step he said was possibly Biopsy... Needless to say at any age the mention of Cancer causes a lot of anxiety.

Prostatitis is still more likely. TA's suggestion of the PHI test is a good next step before opting for a biposy.

These days cancers is very treatable when found in the early stages. If (big if) you have PC, you've caught it early enough for every chance of a cure. Treatments are no fun, but cure is possible.

Likely you've got nothing to worry about except some high PSA numbers.

As TA indicated prostate infection / inflammation can be difficult to treat/diagnose. However given your history I believe that it would be most prudent to have a biopsy. My history and your history are very similar. It is totally up to you. Most likely you could delay this for a long time and recheck a PSA in a few months However, If it were me I’d go for the diagnosis and the biopsy is the only real procedure that will get you to a diagnosis. But that is my personality… Jump in and get it done!

I can't add much to the good advice you've been given (by people more knowledgeable than me), except to point out: 1) that the bicycle riding probably has nothing to do with your PSA (or anything else regarding your prostate); and 2) you should try to take things one step at a time, and not worry about cancer until you actually have a diagnosis (which there's a pretty good chance isn't happening, at least not in the near future).
