Not many people have read The Awesome. It is one of those semi self-published Amazon books. It's not exactly a top ten seller... or in the top 100... It is currently the number 309,483rd best selling book on Amazon. But it is 959th in the Teen Fantasy Coming of Age category.

Update: I received an email from one of you guys asking if this book is any good. I had no idea. I had simply done an Amazon search for a book named "Awesome" as a play of words on Andrew's statement that he had "read a book once and it was awesome." The closest match was a book named "THE Awesome" and I decided that was close enough. So I linked to it. But was it any good? No clue.

So, I read the plot synopsis. It's a Teen / Young Adult novel obviously inspired by Larry Coreia's "Monster Hunters International" series of shoot-em-up fantasy books. I quite like Coreia's books, especially the third book in the series -- "Monster Hunters Alpha" which is one of my all time favorite novels about werewolves. Actually, if you like that sort of thing it's worth reading the other books in the series just to provide a context for Alpha.

But that's Larry Coreia. What about Eva Darrows who wrote "The Awesome"? Still couldn't tell.

So I bought the Kindle e-book (currently on sale for $3.99) so I could read enough of it to give you guys an honest answer.

That answer? It is that I doubt that most of you would like the book very much. It's fairly well written for a semi self-published, young adult, fantasy novel that reads like fan fiction with lots of very adolescent sex scenes.

Bozo, this book almost made the cut for this weekend. My wife & I have a weekend roadtrip starting this afternoon, and we often listen to audiobooks while driving. Based on your post, which seemed to come out of nowhere (still seems like that), I thought it must be good. I looked over some reviews, and pitched it to my wife yesterday afternoon, she bought-in and it was agreed...we would download it and listen on this trip. Well, then last night we watched Tuesday's Late Show (Colbert) and saw James Comey, and on the spot we flipped to his A Higher Loyalty book...looking for info on the pee-pee tape!

We travel a lot, so your Tell-Tale book is still a candidate for next time, but I'd ask you to sell it a bit more. Your comment above (and some of the reviews) did give me a little pause...a reviewer said the 2nd half of the book is best, which makes me think the first half is not so good. Sell.

I picked it up on Kindle as I like reading about how the brain works.

"The Believing Brain" by Michael Shermer and "The Righteous Mind" by jonathan Heigdt are two of my favorites. Both are about why we believe in things especially myths and why and where do our values and beliefs come from. (hint: from the neural pathways that are in large part inherited.)

JohnT you made a post awhile back and you mentioned something {for the life of me it escapes me}that made me think you may be an amputee in some limb...not sure...which is why not too long ago..in one of my ramblings{oh yes I be a rambling man...devotion true} I recommend the book in an oblique and less forceful way...I might have just used the authors last name as a ref...anyway in the book ...as you will find...there is more than one reference to phantom limbs...one of mirrors...another of human empathy fascinating stuff...
As to your book mentions...I intend to read them and am positive I will see the connections that feed into my evolving belief systems...beliefs evolve...in my view...or should...my mind goes the extra mile with myths...they are a precursor to reality...and in a metaphorical way are truer than "truth" regards JohnT...you are a honest searcher and human...logo

Fear not, I am not offended. You are correct; I lost my leg 50 years ago in Vietnam Nam and am well aware of phantom pain. Still have it after 50 years, although much diminished over the years. I'm currently reading the chapter on phantom pain and it is very interesting. And yes, I can still feel my toes if I concentrate. Many of my close friends don't realize that I'm an amputee and you wouldn't know unless I told you.

John T...Thank you for that...A thought I had...on phantom pain...not mentioned as a possibility...in the book....It may sound nuts...and might be...if phantom pain exists...as it certainly does on body parts out side the body...why couldn't it exist on body parts...inside the body...I think of Purgatory and his continuous/chronic pain and others who...in large numbers suffer from such...is it possible this chronic pain results from parts dissected...it seems ridiculous... I t would be amazing if instead of opioids , 420 and such some sort of technology...could and might relieve pain in the same way it is being done on outside limbs...It gets down to ...really what is pain?...anyway...nerve impulse...synapse...the brain...

Richard Deutch an astro phycist from Oxford...has a book called...The Fabric of Reality...long hard reading...a brilliant mind...makes a case...for virtual reality that is stunning in its possibilities good and bad and goes into exactly what is going when for instance light enters the eye and how the brain receicves it...he makes the case that it is feasible that a computer at some point in the future could duplicate that and the reality would be identical to reality...one programed by man the other?........again a difficult read...that needs study...repetition of read...so as to understand...something complicated ex...martial arts...taking apart and re asembling and a complex weapon system...being a great football quarter back...surgeon...and of course my favorite juggleing multiple A/C in a 3 dimensional matrix...even 4 if you count timing/intuition......all preceding have this in common....Ok enuff...I do ramble...no response is needed merely for yours and others perusal...but then as always in one of my threads...geometric tangents of anykine allowed and rewarded...or not

Perhaps I am, once again, not quite getting your point but I have a little trouble separating your idea of phantom pain in body parts that are still part of the body from "referred pain" (link to Wikipedia) where pain is felt at one point in the body because of painful stimulus to a nerve somewhere else.

The classic referred pain on this forum is when the irritation of the nerves in the area of the bladder neck is felt as pain in the area of the urinary meatus*. Much of our accumulated wisdom here for men recovering from prostate surgery consists of techniques for cleaning, lubing, and manipulating a body part that, actually, isn't the site of the problem at all. But, hey, it gives guys something to do while they are waiting for the hurt to go away.

*Learn a new word today! "Meatus." Look it up.

PeterD You either misunderstood my point or I am misunderstanding you'rs...I am referring to phantom pain not sympathetic pain...I...to my knowledge made no reference to the latter...and raised the possibility that...as we know...Patients that have outer body parts that are removed(amputated} do experience phantom pain...it could be possible that body parts removed internally experience the same phantom pain...causing chronic pain such as Purgatories and many others and if that is so...can future technology relieve that pain negating the need for for opiates, etc in the same way as DR.Ramachandran has done for external body part removal...Note his technology is very primitive as anyone who reads the book will discover...It interests me if he has considered this possibility and if so what his thought are on that...I always defer to a position that I agree...but I need to see...quite frankly the logic of such if it exists...and if not...at the least not be expected to...willy nilly accept a proclamation of such...tricky business...communication...in any setting...logo eyes couldn't resist the irony of the emoji...rolling eyes re another thread...nope...meme

I just shot an email to my friend Dr,Ramachandran I have a virtual reality rolodex and know him well...tee hee...If I knew how to cut and paste better I would put it in a post...I have a new computer{hate it}non mac...I knew how with the mac...I try to figure it out...Iphones and computers...yikes toothpaste out of the tube tho I will let you know of any reply...I communicated in typical fashion If I get a one word response I'm doomed...if no response...he's gonna gyp me out of his future nobel prize winnings...Hey I just want the trip there...no mas...no mas

In all seriousness I did in fact email him with my thought....my wife thinks my thought makes sense...but then she loves me...she still feels pain where her appendix was...removed 13 years ago...If this gets any kind of reply I will next contact David Deutch...I may have said Richard Deutch some where...its Dr David Deutch Fabric of Reality...tho being my counterintuitive self prefer...The Reality of the Fabric...idk...it emotes more...but then who am I to tell someone else how to write their "taughts"....know what I mean jellybean??

After rereading certain parts of the book...I can say with a high level of certainty...that I have changed my mind on one particular aspect of my thought...while most of us are arguably wired pretty much the same...there are millions that have unique wiring( the book goes into great depth with examples galore of this}...this changes my thinking about..... about people that would often say on this forum as a reason/excuse for whatever...'that's the way I'm wired'...it has a tangible spark of reality...having said that...it matters not generically at least...more so particularly..in spite/because of......

Imo...what particular gift/curse you may have ...one has a responsibility to integrate it into a "progressive" life...sometimes we are born with this or that ability or lack of an ability...some times an accident...war...sickness...whatever changes our wiring...the response{tho uniquely different for all}ability remains...we all need each other to accomplish this which imo is the silver lining and perhaps the raison de etre for such ....thanks for the ear....not a proclamation...my thoughts!!! So Prato...you may not be as underwater as you "may think" So to all..remain boyant in all your trials and seasons...there is reason and a reason for us all... now as Dobie Grey would say....Drift Away...logo
