Catheter irritating at entry point

I had surgery six days ago and I think I’m doing quite well largely because I’ve been walking a lot. As of last night the tip of my penis is very red and irritated and it hurts to walk as the catheter rubs against it. I don’t want to cut back walking but the only relief I get is from sitting still. Any suggestions?

That's par for the course...Samster told you pretty much what a doctor would tell you...recovery is two steps forward...one step back for aboutt out 6 months.....you eventually get to the 19th hole...a lot of us take short cuts there at times...for grins and giggles...

Vaseline, and maybe some cortisonce cream at the tip for a day or so till the inflammation calms down

Keep the area clean and lubricated! I had the same problem which ended up with a fossa navicularis urethral strictures about 1/4 to 3/8" from the tip. It required repeated dilation which I can tell you was fun.

If I might offer an alternate opinion -- one that, sadly, isn't particularly helpful I'm afraid -- that sort of pain in the end of your member while you are recovering from prostate surgery is often 'referred pain' from the bladder neck. There is a nerve that runs near your bladder and when that nerve is irritated you feel it as a pain in the end of your penis. What you are feeling is the inflammation and irritation from the area of the stitches in your urethra near your bladder. It gradually goes away as you heal.

Your urologist will tell you to keep the area clean and will suggest some sort of slippery goo to dab on the tube. The preferred goo varies from uro to uro. My urologist likes a light petroleum jelly more than something like Neosporin since infections there are fairly rare and there are occasional patients who react to the antibiotic.

I found that the positioning of the attachment device on my leg was important. I learned to position it so the the catheter tube went straight down and didn't curve too quickly. That meant positioning the device more on the inside of my thigh.
