What does bone pain feel like?

I am sure this has been discussed a million times and I almost feel bad about asking it but I was just wondering what it feels like when you experience pain from bone mets. My dad said he had pain on the outer side of his hip yesterday that went down the side of his leg. He said it was more of a sharp pain. He said it lasted about 2 hours and then he went to bed. When he got up there wasn't any pain and he hasn't had any pain since. (it's been about 24 hours or so) I thought maybe he had been laying down too long as he tends to lay in bed more than he should. But normally he lays on the other side. I asked him if he fell or remembers doing anything to himself and he said no, but then he said that he might have done something when he picked up a log or when he bent down to tie his shoe. I am thinking he is making excuses because he doesn't want to face the possibility it could be bone mets. Any opinions here?

Arthritis / osteoporosis are possibilities. I have those plus some bone mets that come and go as far as pain is concerned.

The arthritis / osteoporosis hit as sharp excruciating pain (15 on a scale of 0-10), followed by lesser discomfort for a few hours to a day, but after a nap and no exertion with a mild NSAID, they go away. My mobility is severely limited by the joint pain.

The rib and spine met pain (generally) goes away when I'm fresh out of chemo or or the first couple of months of my lupron shot. They return later, and are continuous, 24x7 at around a 5-6 pain on a scale of 10 for weeks. I have to arrange to sleep only on my left side to keep from putting pressure on the ribs.

I was thinking sciatica -- shooting pain going down the leg from the hip -- compression of the sciatic nerve can be from osteoarthritis.

Lisa, I have degenerative disc disease and the pain that your talking about that your father is experiencing is exactly what I experience. Some days I can walk it off and other days you just wanna scream! I take quite a bit of alleve and get epidural injections in my back. Also have arthritis which adds to the mix throw in some Lupron and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm better not to say anything. When I read some of the stories on the forum here makes me realize how good I have it so just kinda put it in the back of my mind and keep on keeping on!

If it was a competition I totally lost...Pda said what I was going to...as we say in Hawaii..." you snooze...you lose"...its a bit after 5am here...coffee's worken...aging aches subsiding after hot shower followed immediately by cold as I can get shower...boom...yeh...I'm awake....the exercise's work for me ///btw

I've known several people on the lower end of the spectrum with lower back pain who have been referred to Physical Therapy for evaluation and lower back and "core" strengthening and stretching exercises. If it works, all the better. The more mobile and active we can be, the better our quality of life.

Thanks everyone. He hasn't complained anymore about the hip/leg pain so I am thinking it was likely nothing.
