Are SBRT and Cyberknife the same thing?

Are SBRT and Cyberknife the same thing, or is Cyberknife a form of SBRT, or is it perhaps a brand name? Just curious, as I see them used interchangeably. I know it's irrelevant in my case, as I was told early on that I was ineligible for Cyberknife due to my high PSA and Gleason.

There are a few recent articles on SBRT trials for high risk PCa, but at the time I had to make a decision, SBRT and Proton were not viable options.

I suppose I should point out that we all make our choices given our circumstances at the time and the information we have available. Surgery is not necessarily just a "knee jerk" reaction, as is sometimes espoused by those who had the benefit of an early diagnosis and more favorable pathology.

Rob, I’m pretty sure Cyberknife is a brand name , synonymous with SBRT.

OH, and I was considered low risk, Surgery was a conscious, well thought out choice. I’d do it again, given the circumstances,

Cyber knife is a type of SBRT. IMRT can also be given in high doses .
I had SBRT to femur using the same machine which treats patients with low doses of IMRT.
The RO told me the location of the tumor dictates which modality he uses.

Cyber knife is one equipment platform for SBRT. Another is the Varian TrueBeam platform. They do apparently work a bit differently and I understand that treatment is faster with the TrueBeam system.

Cyberknife is a brand name of a manufacturer of SBRT equipment. Here is a list of others:

I was given SBRT using the same platform that you had SRT with. The big differences, other than fractionation and tight margins and dose constraints, is that SBRT as primary therapy uses INTRA-fractional tracking whereas IMRT only uses INTER-fractional tracking. With RapidArc, each treatment took 5-10 minutes, whereas with CyberKnife, each treatment takes 45 minutes to an hour. There are other small differences.

Another thing I noted about using the rapid arc linac for SBRT was the incredible increase in cost per fraction compared to using that same machine for low dose IMRT and the fact that Medicare reimbursed 100% when I had SBRT in a hospital setting vs. in an outpatient clinic where they reimbursed 25% for IMRT. So I guess these fractions are priced based on two factors: the dosage administered and the place where it’s administered. By dosage I mean the number of grays administered per fraction not the amount of time to administer one gray.
Here’s my experience:
One fraction of IMRT of 1.8 grays took 15 minutes and cost $1,800 and was reimbursed at $25%.
One fraction of SBRT of 9 grays also took 15 minutes cost $16,000 and was reimbursed at 100%.

So SBRT is about twice as pricey per gray as IMRT using the same machine. Not sure if it costs twice as much to administer.
But SBRT is a lot more convenient to the patient and a lot more efficient for the RO.

You had SBRT for a bone met, which is a completely different thing. The cost to the patient for SBRT is about half of the cost of IMRT.

Again, TA you are right on the money. MSKCC advertises their SBRT and claims the treatment takes 5-10 minutes as opposed to Cyberknife which can take up to an hour! yeah

Yes, but at least in the CyberKnife center where I was treated, all I had to do was lie there, fully dressed, with a nice, warm blanket and listen to good music of my choice. If I had the choice of RapidArc treatment in 10 minutes versus CyberKnife for an hour, I think other factors would have driven my choice, not the treatment platform.

Yes, Cyberknife is one system to deliver SBRT, but I wouldn't call it synonymus though.

My SBRT/Cyberknife at Swedish in Seattle was 5 fractions---36.25GY and the cost was a little north of $12,000 for everything to include the marker placement and scans.
