I’m posting mainly for the benefit of recent RPs who are stressing out about slow or no progress on continence.
I had RP in August 2018. For the first 2-3 weeks, I was near totally incontinent and using several diapers a day. Around week 4 I transitioned to pads, but needed several of those a day. For the next two months, it was 2 steps forward, 1 step back. My first posts on HW were over frustration at the many setbacks. Veteran members counseled patience. Then rather suddenly, over the course of a week at about the 3 month mark, I noticed my pads were pretty much dry when I went to change them, and started going padless.
Over the next several months, I considered myself continent except for stress situations like coughing, sneezing and laughing. For long trips I would wear a pad just for security.
Well, it’s nearly 10 months since my surgery, and I’m about to board a flight home after a week’s business trip. I brought pads with me but never had to use them. That includes during business meetings and on long plane flights (6+ hours). I have no restrictions on what I eat or drink. The best triumph was when I had a dream I was peeing and woke up to discover I had not wet the bed.
So, there really is hope of regaining true continence. If you’re experiencing only slow progress, don’t despair. Stay the course.
