Xofigo, anyone been on that journey and could you share?

My husband is scheduled for a consultation this Tuesday to maybe start this treatment. It's been a long year for us, he has just completed 34 chemo treatments and his PSA is rising. 6.49 to 8.43 in 2 weeks. He had 5 treatments of Jevtana from April to Aug, then 8 treatments of Taxotere, Carboplatan. In November he started weekly treatments of Mitoxantron for 21 weeks. He's pretty beat up from all of it!
He just had a CT and bone scan, which were both clear, but with the PSA rising faster than it ever has, I guess this may be next. I'm not sure if my signature will show up, but at the start of this journey 17 years ago, his PSA was 9.
Would love to get some input, thanks.

I'm sure this could be in my future, as my doubling time on Taxotere has suddenly popped up.

But to date, I've not had in depth discussions, nor anyone in my support group has tried it.

Thanks for your replies. Guess we'll know more tomorrow. I have searched the sight and seen a few things on it, so will post after we've seen the doctor. From what I've read, since there are no new mets, he might not qualify.

Updated my bio, but not everything got saved!! Anyway, looking back he has had a total of 34 chemo treatments, the last ones weekly at a weaker dose than normal.

Hi SMO,
My DH had one round of xofigo. The side effects weren't too awful in his case, and the reduction in pain and mets was significant. I don't know if anything has changed, but we were told this tx is primarily for bone pain control, not met reduction. IDK in your hubbies case. You didn't mention Zytiga or Xtandi. Has he had either of those? The side effects of those are generally less difficult on the body, from what I have seen. I was surprised to see mitoxantrone. Gary had that too, but few docs seem to use it.

PS...your signature just showed up and I see the Zytiga and xtandi. Gary did a retry on the xtandi after chemo and it worked! Maybe ask about another go at Zytiga for your DH. Just throwing out ideas.😊

Thanks Celebrate life. I asked the doctor about restarting the Xtandi, we have about 1/2 months worth sitting in the cupboard and he acted like that won't work. Gets frustrating!

We saw the doctor today and she thought we were bringing copies of the last 2 CT scans and also bone scans, which we weren't told to bring. We have to wait until the platelets are over 100, so will see the oncologist next week and go from there. Husband doesn't really sound like a candidate since he's not really in any bone pain, so not even sure we should follow through. We'll see what numbers are next week and go from there!

SMO1 - just thought I'd chime in. Last year husband asked MO about restarting Casodex. MO said it wouldn't do anything. Since Husband had a script, he refilled and started to take it (he didn't even tell me!). His PSA dropped from 1.2 to .6. The doctor didn't believe the PSA test and ran another one and the results were the same. He was quite surprised as his belief was that Casodex should only be used for the initial flare when first starting Lupron. Our reasoning was that the urologist prescribed it as an ongoing treatment with Lupron so why not try and see if it works?

Now this was less than one year after diagnosis so I'm sure that was part of it. But the moral of the story is that the doctors go by best practices and best practices aren't always what is best for the patient - especially with this type of cancer that abides by very few rules.

If your husband feels that he should give Xtandi a chance, push the doctor. As long as it doesn't go against any federal prescription rules, the side effects are minimal and the insurance will cover it, why not try it and see?

My psa doubled to .33 from .16 in two months. I’m going off HT after 12 months and waiting for Psa to get to 2.0 for another axumin scan . My RO recommends xtandi and xofigo if bone mets are found again. Due to a warning from Bayer about Zytiga interaction with xofigo, I won’t be using Zytiga. But early use of xofigo for bone mets without symptoms is recommended.
