Hello GregHal,
It's always good to hear from a variety of respondents, when posting ...
My treatment history is revealed below my signature. As you can see, I have had three forms of ADT shots ... first LUPRON, then FIRMAGON, and now ZOLADEX.
Long story, short version ... my PSA was showing "spikes and flares" while I was on LUPRON. I had no problems with the LUPRON shots, whatsoever, but my oncologist felt we could suppress P.S.A. more consistently by trying other forms of ADT shots. He also said we could ALWAYS return to LUPRON, if we didn't see any improvements. I had been on LUPRON for quite a few months when we decided to see if the other forms of ADT shots would work better.
My next step was FIRMAGON ... injected into the abdomen, just as you have described.
Yikes! Every single time I had a FIRMAGON shot, I had a site injection reaction --- which, unfortunately, is a reported side effect for FIRMAGON.
In my case, a red and swollen lump would appear within a couple of days after receiving the FIRMAGON shot. It almost felt as if a golf ball had been implanted in my abdomen --- red, swollen, and it STUNG like I had been bitten by a HORNET! The hornet sting feeling would persist for at least a week afterwards ... by the time the swelling would go down completely, then it would be time for another FIRMAGON injection. Yikes!
I had this site injection reaction every single time I had a FIRMAGON shot, unfortunately. My oncologist didn't see any improvement in my P.S.A. levels, so we made the decision to step away from the FIRMAGON shots. I know that the swollen "knots" can remain for some fellows, even after they discontinue FIRMAGON shots.
Important to say --- FIRMAGON has helped many members here, for which I'm thankful. I would have been willing to put up with the site injection reaction, if I had seen improved P.S.A. levels, but that wasn't the case. So, in my case, stepping away from FIRMAGON was an easy decision.
From there, we decided to try ZOLADEX injections --- I have had NO issues with ZOLADEX --- and best of all, my P.S.A. levels decreased and stabilized.
My original urologist refused to use anything but LUPRON. Fortunately, my oncologist had a wider perspective on things, and that led to better results, in the end, with ZOLADEX. In my case, ZOLADEX knocked the testosterone level down, and my P.S.A. went down, as a result.
An important aspect of my story, too --- if you are on any form of ADT shot, please ask your oncologist to request a testosterone test, now and again. This is OFTEN overlooked, and it is SO EASY to throw a testosterone test in with your usual lab work.
If you are taking the time and trouble to get your ADT shot, you want to be ASSURED that it is helping to keep your testosterone level LOW, so that it can help you keep your P.S.A. suppressed. In my case, switching from LUPRON to FIRMAGON and ultimately ZOLADEX helped me.
My oncologist assesses my testosterone level regularly, as well as P.S.A. and other components, when I do lab work.
GregHal --- I would ask your doctor if there is something that can be done to take away the "hornet sting" sensation you are feeling from your FIRMAGON shots. There might be a topical ointment that can be used to take away the discomfort you are experiencing.
I can "feel your pain" and I well remember the lingering sting from those FIRMAGON shots.
Hang in there, GregHal --- just wanted to reach out with a few lines.
Handshake, from across the miles,
