Doctor or self order 3 mo PSA tests

Do you have to order your own psa tests or does your doc send you an order every 3 months? Im at labcorp and I just had to order mine and pay through a third party since I dont have one from my doc today. I'd ask doc but he's west coast (not opening anytime soon). Wonder if I can get my insurance to reimburse that. rolleyes

I'm not sure about your insurance, but the doc does and always has ordered all of Randy's bloodwork.

It sounds like you need to communicate with your radiation oncologist. My RO cut me loose several months ago and now my primary care doc orders labs for my PSA tests, when my RO was following me, she ordered the labs.

Hi Frosty.....My radiation oncologist offered to write the scrip but is 250 miles away so I just call my GP's office every three months about a week in advance and they email me a prescription for the PSA. The lab does not require any appointment so I just walk in at my convenience with the prescription. I've never had an issue with insurance paying for the test, but I guess you will have to call the insurance company to find out about the possibility of reimbursement. Good luck and your numbers so far look really good.

If I go through my urologist and have her order a PSA it costs $133 but if I walk into the lab and pay cash upfront, no insurance claim filed at all, the cost is only $30. If you will not reach your deductible self ordering and self pay would be the way to go. No appointment is necessary at either Avera or Sanford for this and several other blood tests.

You can get a blood draw and test at most labs on a walk-in basis with no script. You pay for the test up front. Usually around $85. If you have a prescription from a doctor who is in your insurance plan, your plan will pay for it...For a few bucks more you can get a complete blood work-up (CBC, CMP)..You will usually get the results in a few hours..

Thanks everyone. It was about $85 for the PSA and Testosterone together. My insurance usually covers labs so I'll try to submit it to them and see what happens. Lesson learned either way. (Communicate with Doc) Got it. smile

Hello FrostyPro ~

Always good to get a wide variety of responses, so here's mine ...

My oncologist is very proactive, and I'm on ZYTIGA, so he watches my lab levels closely ...

I also receive a monthly ADT shot, so I see my oncologist every month, year 'round, like clockwork.

At the end of each monthly consultation, then he puts in a request for lab work for the following month, so the request is already in place for each month.

Needless to say, I am on a first-name basis with all the techs at the lab, seeing them every four weeks.

One more detail ... I visit the lab a couple of days in advance, before I see my oncologist.

This way, he receives ALL the results from the lab in advance, and has time to study them.

I used to combine my visit to the lab right before I went to see my oncologist.

I prefer visiting the lab in advance now. Receiving my lab results a couple of days in advance has led to much more insightful and informed consultations. Works for me, anyway!
