Rare side effect of Prolia--- Cataracts

My husband's vision had been worsening for several months. He saw his ophthalmologist today. He has a cataract in his left eye- caused by the Prolia shots that he has to take to deal with the bone loss caused by the Lupron shots to treat his PC. Doc says to return in 6 months- it may be possible to treat this particular kind of cataract with medications. Fingers Crossed and prayers going up.


Just wanted to make those of you here aware of another side effect they don't necessarily tell you about. sad

Hope they can get him sorted out. In the meanwhile, keep an eye on him in dark, unevenly lit spaces. For someone with cataracts, trying to find a seat in a darkened movie theater is murder.

Peter- Thanks, but we have only been to the movies once in 41 years- and that was for the very first Star Trek movie . He can't stand movie theatres for some reason. But we have a great DVD/BlueRay library--- LOL!

May I ask how long your husband was taking Prolia before the cataracts showed up?

What is the evidence that Prolia caused the cataracts to form?
In other words, is there a scientific explanation/hypothesis, or is this case an unfortunate coincidence?

Another possible explanation is that the development of cataracts is influenced by his ADT treatment. SEs from ADT like weight gain, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, are known risk factors for cataracts. Hopefully its treatable.

Mr. Bill, He has been on Prolia for about 18 months now. I’m not sure how the doc ‘knows’ the cataract is the result of the Prolia (and I guess the Lupron), but hubby indicated the doc was very certain.

Adverse reactions reported in ≥ 10% of Prolia-treated patients receiving ADT for prostate cancer or adjuvant AI therapy for breast cancer, and more frequently than in the placebo-treated patients were: arthralgia (13.0% placebo vs. 14.3% Prolia) and back pain (10.5% placebo vs. 11.5% Prolia). Pain in extremity (7.7% placebo vs. 9.9% Prolia) and musculoskeletal pain (3.8% placebo vs. 6.0% Prolia) have also been reported in clinical trials. Additionally, in Prolia-treated men with nonmetastatic prostate cancer receiving ADT, a greater incidence of cataracts was observed (1.2% placebo vs. 4.7% Prolia). Hypocalcemia (serum calcium < 8.4 mg/dL) was reported only in Prolia-treated patients (2.4% vs. 0%) at the month 1 visit.

That's good info; thanks Union98.
The doc may be correct that the cataracts are treatment related (ADT + Prolia); good for him/her!
