So we had GREAT news today.

The pathology report from the prostatectomy downgraded the Gleason score from 4+5 to 4+3; t3 to t2n0; negative margins.

Thank you all again for your support and positive energy!

On to the next phase of recovery.

That is great: this means that he has a reasonable chance of the surgery being "once and done". Now the next thing: Continence. Some guys are dry from the moment the cath comes out, others take a little while. Which group is he in?

Also, it's not too early to start taking low dose cialis-2.5 or 5 mg a day. This helps with blood flow, which helps healing. It does seem to have some effect on continence as well as helping other things recover. Some docs like to wait on this till the 6 week mark and some start right away.

Were they able to spare one or both nerves in surgery?

That's what we are fervently hoping for -- once and done.

We're not that lucky -- it'll take a while with the continence.
He's supposed to start the 20mg Cialis right after he's done with the antibiotic and flomax this week.
And Kegels next week as well.
The most annoying thing right now is the swollen scrotum. This morning, he felt some numbness on one spot on the left thigh, near where the cath was taped... we're a bit worried about that and keeping a close eye on it. He just stopped putting on the lidocaine jelly.

As for the nerves, I think they were taken out due to the biopsy score of G9 and perineural invasion detected.
I did ask the doctors directly if the nerves were spared at least the right side (as the biopsy was negative on that side), and their response was their priority was to make sure they got all the cancer out. The tumor was mainly in the mid section.
The final pathology confirmed the perineural invasion with negative surgical margins.
We'll just have to deal with whatever comes...

Summary of the pathology report:
Tumor on 10% of prostate
70%G4 25%G3 5%G5 (4+3, grade group 3), t2c
Seminal vessels - no cancer detected
Lymph nodes - no cancer detected
Perineural invasion - present
Negative surgical margins

Dr T popped in unexpectedly yesterday and when he saw the final path report, his response was "this is priceless", and we agree wholeheartedly.

Congratulations on the excellent pathology report. Continue the healing process. I recommend a lot of walking as it gets a person back in shape and can help with continence.

I was studying the 7-page final path report and could not find anything on the nerves... I think they’ve been spared!!! turn

Early today, Day 11, hubby was able to get to the bathroom in time to urinate. Progress!

Feeling so blessed.

It’s been 3 weeks since the surgery and things are getting better day by day.

In the past couple of days, my husband experienced some bleeding and naturally we got concerned. Today we called the doctor and he reassured us that it is normal. This is the healing process and it is scar tissue breaking off and being passed out.

His continence is getting better... as long as he gets up from bed to go, he is dry there. Daytime is the issue... still leaking a bit. He told me not to make him laugh. tongue

...chip the porcelain? Passing clots is no fun. There was one individual in here who peed into a strainer because he was curious about little black bits that showed up in his urine. He decided they were bits of dissolving sutures.

He will likely find (I did) that the time lag between "I need to go soon" and "I need to go right freaking NOW" is a lot shorter than it used to be. It sounds good that he's dry at night--that is an important marker. The trick daytime is to remember to kegal as he stands up to prevent those little leaks. Laughing? Well, that's a thing. He'll get there--give it time. Heck, 3 1/2 years later, sometimes I drip a little at random moments. It's a contrary thing, but I find I'm more likely to drip, even know, if I let myself get dehydrated. That's right, more likely to drip if my bladder is empty than if it's filling.

That would be me, actually.
