Biopsy should I worry about the procedure?

Hi I've been having my PSA checked for a number years after it was recorded at 11 about three years ago but went down to 2 something the DRE was smooth at the time so I was told to check on it every year. Now it's 4.8 and the DRE from the urologists shows two small nodules and Prostate is about 50 grams but quite nodular down the right side.

I've had a MIR scan to target the area for biopsy and tomorrow I'm having a flexible cystoscopy the biopsy is booked in for Thursday which I'm rather worried about complications as after all the process will stab my Prostrate a dozen times, surly this can cause something that if left wouldn't cause a problem. The Urologists explain the complications and mortality rates

I need some fellow advice on should I have the biopsy? Or should I just keep a check on it ?
I have no problems in emptying my bladder and go regular to the toilet, just hate to think if this biopsy will spoil my normal toilet routines the Urologists says it's 70% sure it be cancer.

I'm hoping it calcium as I had problems with kidney stones about four years ago.

I'm having my first (last?) biopsy on Wednesday. I can tell you I've been through a range of emotions about it, but never "should I do or not do this?". It's a procedure that can preserve your life, after all.

Do the biopsy. The guys here have assured me it'll likely be a non-event in terms of the procedure and the biggest issue is likely some blood in your plumbing afterward, which will dissipate over time as Pratoman quite rightly says. Complications are very rare; just be sure to take your prophylactic antibiotics.

The biopsy is annoying, uncomfortable and undignified. There is a risk for infection. You'll have bleeding, blood in your urine and semen. The Uro should give you antibiotics to take with the procedure and will have you monitor for signs of infection.

You don't have a signature with your PSA readings or other stats so just based on your doc's opinion that you have 70% chance of cancer, which would you rather have - unconfirmed and untreated cancer or the slight risks of a biopsy?

Get the biopsy. There are worse things in life and everything has risks.

Biopsy isn't fun or dignified. I found the lidocaine injection into the prostate prior to the biopsy was painful and caused an immediate cramp like feeling. Luckily that only lasted for a couple of seconds. The biopsy itself was tolerable. As everybody has said, each time they shoot the gun it feels like a rubber band snap on your skin, it hurts but only last a second. I think the anticipation of each shot is what drove me crazy.

As for infection, usually they give you an prophylactic antibiotic like cipro (ciprofloxacin) prior to the biopsy. There still is a chance (less than 5%) of an infection that can lead to hospitalization.

It is true that there are some risks involved with biopsy. But that is very small. Hearing about harrowing stories about biopsy from some people can do great deal of harm. The morning of my first biopsy, I was so mortified that I had a panic attack. Then the actual biopsy without any form of anesthetic was no problem. My URO told it would feel like a rubber band snapping against the prostate. And it was precisely like that. The second biopsy I had, I got the injection and the biopsy was a breeze. Then when I got the three gold markers, the URO did not use anesthetic and it was painful. But a pain that lasts only a second or two does not cause much discomfort.

Should you worry? No
Will you worry? Yes, we all do.
Should you have it done anyway? Yes.

Just make sure you take the antibiotics your doctor prescribes, and if mild sedation is offered (Valuim, etc.), that is a good idea, too.

The fact that you don't have any urinary symptoms does not mean you do not have prostate cancer. I don't think that calcium wold explain your PSA. Unfortunately, as everyone here says, you need the biopsy. You could wait, but for what? If you have prostate cancer, waiting will only reduce your odds of a cure, and make the ultimate treatment worse.
