Brief update

Hi all, I hope that you are all doing and feeling well. I see lots of new names have appeared on the forum since I last posted... sorry to see that you’re here... but you are definitely in the right place for support.

For those of you that don’t know my Dad’s story, very briefly, diagnosed over 3 years ago, did brilliantly up until December 2017. Sadly we are now at the end stage. Dad’s was advanced on diagnosis ... so for the ‘newbies’... I don’t wish to alarm you... yes pca is a serious diagnosis but for many men can be very well controlled as you can see from the forum.

Anyway... nothing much to report really, just felt the need to ‘check in’ here. This process is nothing at all like I expected. Dad isn’t in pain, he’s in bed 24/7 and gets what he describes as an uncomfortable feeling in his back and groin but that’s all he complains of. Mentally very with it, very strong. He’s still managing to laugh and joke. When I say it’s nothing like I expected, it’s the up and down nature of it all... some days I think it’s going to happen today, on a bad day he just sleeps for most of it and eats very little... the next day... he’s stronger again. He’s definitely sleeping a lot more, he had visitors earlier on in the week and I think it probably took a little bit too much out of him.

Let’s see what today brings... I’m finding it very difficult, we are all worn out but you just keep on going and we continue to be positive around him. I’m lucky I’ve been able to take time off work and I spend all my time with him, helping Mum. Most of his carers are pretty good and that’s now running more smoothly. District nurses...rather disappointing but that’s another story.

I guess I just wanted to let you all know how he was doing. I’m incredibly proud of him, and despite the situation we are in .... he remains positive and is pretty comfortable most of the time.

Thank you for your responses. He is still drinking and still passing urine. He eats too... only sweet things , sometimes a little toast. That’s worth noting Halbert... and will keep an eye on it.

On his last visit to the hospital we were told a couple of months but probably less, that was 2 months ago now so he’s doing well. The consultant that told us that was not the pca specialist though... it was the man that tended to Dad when he had the fainting episode.

Anyway... onwards and upwards. Dad is a fan of Hitchcock films so I’m thinking at some point today we shall be watching another one it often takes a few days to get through one film as he tends to nod off... bless him.

Hi Kathy! I have been wondering how your dad has been. I'm glad to hear he is not in any pain. Has he had any bone scans lately? I am so glad his spirits are high. It can make a big difference. My dad's PSA is up to 64 now. They have put him on a new drug that is supposed to work like Zytiga. It's called Erleada. We will see what happens with that. He doesn't really seem to be worried about it that much. I think he was more worried about me the whole time than he was about himself. But anyway, keep us updated about your dad!
