I have seen these 2 studies but I have seen others saying similar things. I do think it would be interesting to do a RCT using these forms of vitamin E.

The reason why substances show effectiveness in vitro and not in vivo is largely a mystery (at least for me). For example, when using antimicrobials, in vitro susceptibilities for certain strains of bacteria (Pseudomona, enterobacter, klebsiella) do not correlate well with in vivo responses to antibiotics. You would think that with our own immune systems in conjunction with the antibiotic would show increased effectiveness rather than almost no effectiveness. Initially it was thought that pharmacokinetics or bioavailability problems accounted for the lack of response. Most now think it is more complicated than that. I believe similar problems occur with cancer studies looking at in vitro activity than discovering little response in real patients.

I hope vitamin E does show great activity against prostate cancer. How great would that be? I just won't get my hopes up based on the number of times similar preliminary studies have let me down.

Again, the author was forced to resign for data fabrication. Dunno if this is one of the studies where the data was made up.

The "agent" for which Ohio State applied for a patent is a form of γ-Tocopherol where part of the molecule has been removed and replaced with something else. If it goes anywhere it will be a drug, not a supplement, and, given how long it takes to get through that process it'll be a while. As of 2015 it appears to have been at the petri dish and mouse stage.

That is true.The usual reason for researching anything natural is not to prove that the natural substance is helpful. Where is the money in that? Even if you prove that vitamin ABCDE is very helpful, the #s of companies that can produce vit ABCDE is almost unlimited. The goal- usually IMO - is to change the molecule in some fashion so that it can be patented. That is where the mega bucks are. Although, once the natural substance has been altered, it is now a substance that no human body has ever encountered. Even if it works, there are usually surprise SEs sooner or later.
