There is a reputed surgeon @ Vanderbilt that does them, but I can't remember his name right now. Sorry, maybe someone else will chime in with it.

My surgeon, Dr. James Eastham, Head of Urology, MSKCC, specializes in salvage prostatectomies. (He's mentioned above.) Google "salvage prostatecomy eastham" and you'll find a bunch of papers he wrote and other references. I highly recommend him.

Peter Pinto at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Five years after radiation and hormone treatment, the cancer came back. He does about two salvage prostatectomies a year, using a DaVinci robot. He was very honest about what I would experience: impotence and incontinence, but he forgot to mention the surgery would shorten my penis! That happens because the urethra is reconnected but the prostate is now missing. Two weeks on a catheter. Fortunately, the surgery was successful and at the 3 month visit, my PSA was undetectable. And every week my incontinence gets better.

Performed my procedure 4 years back. I am still undetectable. Had radiation treatment in 2002/3 at MDA Houston. Major complication post salvage surgery was incontinence following stricture surgery. AUS surgery in May of this year.

You may like to contact Dr Vipul Patel in Orlando,who is a poineer in robotic prostatectomy and has done maximum in the world. He does salvage prostatectomy too.

Besides being a five year old thread, why would anyone attempt salvage surgery after radiation when there are other, more effective treatments available?

Check out Karim Touijer at MSKCC in New York. His profile claims salvage prostatectomy as an area of expertise. He’s done >2500 prostatectomies, including mine, but not sure how many were salvage.

In short, I had failed radiation proton therapy at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. . By mid-2017 my local urologist strongly recommended that I investigate the possibility of a salvage radical prostatectomy at Memorial Sloan Kettering. I made an appointment with James Eastham MD after being referred by my urologist and undergoing a series of tests to verify that I qualified for his surgery (I think some of the most basic criteria included a life expectancy of at least 10 years, a PSA within a modest range, cancer contained within the prostate capsule and no evidence of metastasis.) The surgery was done in late-August 2017 but I was unlucky and suffered one of the more common complications during recovery, urethral stricture. I eventually needed urethral surgery (at Temple University) to deal with complete urinary retention I was having because of the stricture. The surgeon explained that I would be completely incontinent after the surgery and that my chances of regaining any significant degree of continence were minimal. My urethra was still open after 3 months and I qualified for an AUS. It was implanted in late June 2018 and activated in August, almost exactly 1 year after Dr. Eastham’s salvage prostatectomy I was finally able to start enjoying my life again. During all this time I was having PSA tests every 3 months. My most recent test was a week ago. My score in all of them was < 0.1 ng/Ml. Although there are never any guarantees with cancer, and despite enduring some of the more unpleasant complications during my recovery, I remain very pleased with the result of my salvage prostatectomy and with Dr. Eastham. I never use the word “cured” but I am happy to say that I am in complete remission.

Although I have to agree that salvage prostatectomies are rarely recommended and performed, I would recommend consulting with Dr. Tim Wilson at St. John's in Santa Monica, CA. Wilson has performed thousand of RP's and he pioneered Robotic RP while in his 30 year tenure at City of Hope in Duarte, CA. He was the Director of their Prostate Cancer Program before moving to St. John's a few years ago. Wilson also has an excellent MO at St. John's named Twardowski, who he recruited from COH, who specializes in PC. Wilson performed my RP and Twardowski was my MO at COH before they both left. I would also recommend Dr. Clayton Lau at City of Hope who succeeded Wilson a few years ago. He is the most experienced PC surgeon at COH and has also performed thousands of RP's.
