John and I both work full-time now, we're both 64 now and will turn 65 in early 2019 within a few months of each other. House is going on the market March 1, 2019 and when it sells, we're out of here. We could retire now, but the health insurance is an issue until Medicare kicks in. We can't afford to retire and stay in New Jersey - our real estate taxes are almost 15k. But we want to get out of the area anyway. Our son lives in NC, but we're planning on the eastern shore of Maryland. Can't wait!

Retired, PCA along with degenerative disc disease in my back and arthritis played into my decision.

Will turn 60 in January. Working full time (55-60 hours per week) at owning an auto repair facility. Wanting to slow down, but not because of the PC.

Diagnosed this year at 54. Had big aspirations for the last phase of my working life but that’s all gone now. Spend too much of my day thinking about PCa. When at work I want to be home with my family. When at home with my family I spend too much time alone searching for answeres. Work has no meaning nor is it a distraction worth having. Probably retire next year before 55.

You just read my mind..seriously, I was just going to start a post with a a poll like this. The one thing I am wondering is how many have Advanced PC with mets(4), and are still working? I have G7(4+3), and really hope to retire at age 64 next August, if at all possibble. My mortgage is very very high! However my desire is to travel with my wife of 31 years, and do my bucket list before ..well ...you know!

I retired at 58 after 24 years in the Navy and 15 at an insurance company. I love retirement!

Hello ~

Diagnosed in my late 40s, with advanced prostate cancer. My treatments continue ... and the treatments I have pursued, as shown in my health history below, have helped me.

I have taught school for nearly thirty years --- I continue to teach full time --- this is the beginning of my sixth year of teaching with a diagnosis of advanced, metastatic prostate cancer.

I have taught hundreds of students since "diagnosis day" --- and they stand alongside me in this journey, just as friends and family do ...

In fact, I just participated in a 5K walk for prostate cancer this past weekend. Some of my school students were there --- working as VOLUNTEERS at the event! Very humbling and moving ...

Stay strong and keep forging ahead, my brothers!

I'm 63 and still working in pretty much the same job the past 41 years. The last 25 have been at the same desk but I'm on my 6th company. Since we kept getting bought out I was able to keep my seniority. Now we're being told its all over Jan 31 2019 unless we reapply to a new company and start from scratch. This past year has made me realize it's time to retire and enjoy life. I'll take the layoff so I can get unemployment. My big worry is affording health insurance. I've been doing computer hardware maintenance the whole time. I'll probably find something part time just to stay busy.

I'll be 59 this month, working full time, but retired from the USAF in 95. I'd like to retire at 62, but it's still a "wait and see" thing.

As soon as my company's stock gets to $100 per share, I'm selling my options and retiring.

I'll also be buying Montana ...

I "retired" under some duress, as I was having issues with the work load stress and 24x7x365 on-call piled on mets, arthritis, Luron and Xtandi.
The general practice in those months was to dig up dirt and fire people for cause rather than lay them off.

When they ran out of targets a couple of months after I left, they laid off a lot of folks. I would have gotten a fair severance if I had stayed, but only if I had survived.

I had set a date based on how much COBRA I could afford, when I could start Social Security, and announced a retirement date to protect myself several months in advance so that they could let me train a replacement. They did not do that in a manner I could work with (long story).

I turned in my computers, cell phones, and left with my personal stuff. At least I was not walked out by security. I got the first full night of sleep without being constantly rousted out for work in 18 years (excepting the nights in the hospital for my PCa surgery).

I cannot wait to retire. After 48 years, I just don’t want to work anymore. I would do it now, but the business I’m in is one of relationships, and it’s hard to just walk out one day, without laying the groundwork first. So a year from December. Unless I’m comfortable walking away, sooner

I'm 56 with 35 years Federal employment. Was seriously contemplating retirement. Then came medical bills, and a lot of uncertainty.

I'm currently undergoing chemo (6th infusion is next Tuesday), and have found that I don't want to be at home alone contemplating things when my body creaks for some unknown reason. Being employed and useful helps me to think outside of me, if that makes sense.

Due to my collection of sick leave, I'm taking 3 days off after each infusion, which results in a 4-day work week followed by a 3-day work week. My mgr is very supportive.

NOTkidneystlnes,that sounds like a pretty good plan. Sitting around alone wouldn't be too good. I think most of would prefer to stay busy. Medical bills are definately a concern. I'm hoping I can get an affordable COBRA benefit..

i retired from my "career" at 62. With the plan of working part time at a Big Box home improvement store which i did. I went on leave the day before my prostrate surgery,(just before hitting 65) intending to return after 6 weeks. I have had trouble regaining my contenance so after 4 months i turned in my time. But i am rehireable so as soon as my control is back i'm going back work part time. I fine it great to get out of the house and enjoy working ( i love to smooz the old girls)

my friends will tell you ive been retired for the past 15 years but I do work. Im self-employed and I have a pretty light schedule. our house is paid off and my wife is 14 years younger and a real go-getter. no kids. no debt. no bills other than recurring ones.

my lifestyle change actually began before PC so nothing has really changed and i'll keep "working" until im no longer able or interested.

Still working, kids are still in college/grad school and not self supporting yet. At least it looks like they will get there, eventually. Like Lifechoice, wife has been gone a few years, which took some of the shine off the notion of saving up for retirement. I do hope to have grandkids someday, but that's not going to be soon, so I have to keep going for quite a while longer.

It's certainly affordable but the locals object to outsiders. I moved here 27 years ago from, YIKES!!!, California and still put up with sh_t comments. Unless you still have the covered wagon your ancestors came in to homestead you are automatically suspect.

That out of they way, several mentioned the importance of social connections at work. That is quite true. I am a retired high school teacher and my life there was all about social relationships. I made sure I had plenty to fill in after I left. I became co-director of our marathon and became a board member and more active in our running club. The biggest social piece was that I enrolled at the local university and started working on another degree, this time far away from my tech/mechanical background: Fine Arts. Not only has this introduced me to a whole new sector of the community, the classes are challenging, something that I read we are supposed to do to keep the gray matter supple.

62 1/2, working full time. My wife if older, goes on magical Medicare in 10 months, I have only 908 days for me, will probably retire after that to take care of her due to her medical issues...

I too had worked in computers my entire life.. worked on communications equipment in the military and took a job in hardware for one of the "route 28" companies in the northeast... Eventually got a business degree and spent most of the rest of my career writing specialized accounting software. But having a knowledge of hardware and industrial infrastructure was a definite plus.

Around age 60 I recognized that I couldn't do what I used to do. The industry had changed dramatically. I did some consulting, but as my wife reached her own physical limitations we planned our retirement right around the time that we both got sick. Her insurance paid for my earlier surgeries, but starting with my RP it was all under medicare.

Unfortunately, her cancer hit before she turned 65 and we had to pay a huge deductible. But things worked out okay, as we had just sold our house. It seems the remainder of the proceeds went toward our move and renovation of our retirement home in Florida. Oh, and a dream vacation to Orlando last year for the grandchildren.

All in all, it worked out fairly well. We haven't been able to "relax and take it easy" just yet, but things certainly could have been a lot worse.
