For several years I've worn and used a prostate cancer golf ball marker...one of the magnetic kind that clips to the cap rim. This morning, I noticed the clip was on the visor, but the magnetic marker was gone.

So, I went online and looked for a replacement. If I wanted a pink breast cancer type, I could choose from dozens of different designs. I also found a few teal ones. But nowhere can I find a replacement blue prostate cancer awareness ball marker.

I noticed this weekend that Wal-Mart has an entire area of pink tee shirts with various logos.

I'm not complaining about the pre-occupation with breast cancer, but it's a little surprising how little attention is given to prostate cancer awareness items.

hopefullly they will have them in movember...but don't hold your breath...tho I do try to defer to the woman...to a point...a slippery sliding point...that's where the principle of love enters...I sure Im not telling you anything you don/t know...and I get your point completely

I did a search not long ago, And bought a bunch of the teal ribbon pins, Don't ask were I found them, Don't remember....LOL

You are right, too many pink ball markers.
I did find some blue ribbon markers plastic at

But, they look cheap. You get 100 for $8.95 and they don't clip on the golf cap. I use a clip-on marker as well.

But, now I am on a search, maybe I'll have some nice ones made and sell them on the internet.

This thread prompted me to look up annual cancer deaths by type. I was pretty surprised that Breast Cancer showed 41,000 and Prostate Cancer 29,000 https://cancer.org/content/dam/cancer-org/research/cancer-facts-and-statistics/annual-cancer-facts-and-figures/2018/cancer-facts-and-figures-2018.pdf
It surprised me, i thought deaths from Breast cancer would be way more than 125% of deaths from Prostate Cancer.

What was shocking was i found another site, that showed in 2010, Breast Cancer in 2010, was expected to kill 40,000 and Prostate Cancer was expected to kill 32,000.

its disheartening to see how while it feels like so much progress seems to have been made, the numbers tell a different story. Maybe I'm missing something. I hope so.

BTW, didnt mean to hijack, the Teal ribbons are for Ovarian Cancer. Now THERE'S a cancer that doesnt get enough attention. Its actually considered a "rare" cancer based on the number of women diagnosed each year, 22,000 expected diagnosis in 2018, but 14,000 deaths. Frightening. Especially if you've been touched by this disease.

I surprised that you are surprised.

Remember the lengthy threads and numerous discussions here at HW/PC last month (yes, it was just last month) during September's Prostate Cancer Awareness month?

No? Neither does anyone else. There weren't any...barely a mention.

If you can't get the men at a prostate cancer social media site energized about Prostate Cancer Awareness month, I think it's foolish to think that the general population would be any more energized.

There are TOO MANY cancers that use blueish ribbons... too many to know for sure if it's prostate or something else.

Many people know about ovarian cancer since Gilda Radner's death in the 70's. And hopefully most know that it is difficult to detect and is often fatal. But when it comes to gonads, the testes have the same advantage as breasts... they're right there up front to feel for a lump. We all love the women in our lives, but let's face it... everyone LOVES breasts, while most everyone HATES testicles... and especially prostates. If PCa is even mentioned it is usually dismissed as inconsequential. If only they knew!

Speaking of "rare" cancers, look into carcinoid or neuroendocrine (NET) cancer. The ribbon color is black and white stripes, because everyone thinks Zebras are just horses with stripes.

My wife and I were just discussing this very thing. It finally dawned on me that NO other cancers get the attention that breast cancer does. We're sensitive here because we know the stats for prostate cancer aren't much different, and we might feel a little left out. But we are far from unique. Just go look at a website for cancer ribbons, how many kinds there are, and then think about how much publicity ANY of them get. Nothing. Zero, zip, zilch, nada. Don't feel bummed about PCa getting short shrift. They ALL do.

We care about our moms, wives, daughters, obviously. We want them to be screened, to do what they need to do.
But much of it is just crass virtue-signaling doing nothing more than wearing pink stuff. Pizza shops use pink boxes, woohoo, look how much they care, buy their pizza! Do they actually contribute MONEY for anything? No, but they'll say they're "raising awareness". Football players were pink shoelaces, or socks, or some other trivial thing. It's all virtue-signaling, an effort to make themselves look good. How much are their team owners donating to breast cancer research? Hmm?

If you talk to actual breast-cancer survivors, many are quite unhappy about all the "think pink" stuff. It's people and companies hijacking their issue for personal or commercial gain. Not much extra happens to truly benefit breast cancer survivors. You might even ask a business just what their pink campaign effort actually does, who do they support, where are they sending contributions. Become a bit of an activist, it might do some good.

So, if the blue-ribbon PCa awareness month doesn't hit the headlines, so what? Don't feel bad. Don't feel angry. Just make a difference where you are. Wear a blue wristband, wear a blue pin, tell people about PCa if they ask. Go ahead and raise awareness if you can, since PCa truly is little discussed despite its prevalence. Suggest screening, relate your story of its importance to you. I used to get a lot of mileage out of my hot flashes that way, since it can be quite evident that they're happening. I'd explain that I'm on a therapy that causes hot flashes, which among men is a comment that will raise eyebrows. That often led to a short conversation about the importance of screening.

Sort of related, I found it interesting that after my wife's breast cancer insurance said they'd pay for reconstruction. After my RALP they won't pay for the sildenafil for penile rehab. And we are supposed to suck it up and stand tall?

Well, all's well that ends well. After a lot of searching, I ended up ordering two of these magnetic hat clip ball markers on eBay for about $2 each plus shipping from Great Britain. The total cost will be about $10 USD. It seems odd that I had to go out of country to find these, since it seems like an awareness device that would appeal to a lot of men. Now that I've ordered these, I'll probably find the old one somewhere.

I don't make a big deal out of my history with prostate cancer...just the ball marker and a lapel pin on my Sunday-go-to-meeting suit. And once I grew a beard for Movember, but no one asked me why I was growing it, so that was a waste of time.

Yeah, I grew a beard last Movember and cut it off after three weeks. It just wasn't me. And I have TWO prostate cancer awareness wristbands, one is light blue and the other is dark blue. Anyone know for sure which is the right color?

EDIT: Google just answered my question... it's light blue. BTW I found this quote at a cancer support website:

Breast cancer organizations have done a great job of promoting pink ribbons, but there are more common cancers that have their own ribbon colors that deserve recognition as well. The three most common types of cancer are skin cancer (or melanoma), lung cancer and prostate cancer (in that order). Skin cancer is represented by a black ribbon, lung cancer by a white ribbon and prostate cancer is light blue.

I went to the “Diseases and Conditions” page and was very surprised to see that the Breast Cancer section only has 25K posts, while PCa has 450K.

As a side note, I didn’t know Lyme Disease was a major issue. They have over 400K posts.

There's more Lyme Disease than we know about out there. It's not talked about much, but I personally know a couple of people who've suffered from that.
