I had my LDR Brachytherapy yesterday, will not go into details about
drinking magnesium citrate and the Fleet enema. In all actuality, those were not bad at all.
Arrived at 7am, read a bunch of material, signed my life away and was brought into pre-op room about
10 minutes later. I was the first patient.
I had to dress down into a gown, then they had me lay down on a gurney, nurse asked all sorts of questions and inputted info. into computer.
She placed an IV in my arm and started saline and electrolytes.
She then explained the procedure, etc…
Let me just say that everyone I talked with was super nice.
After IV was inserted, watched some tv, and anesthesiologist came in 5 mins later. She asked questions, and told me what would be administered, etc.
Note, you will have a breathing apparatus inserted and a catheter. All of this is when you are knocked out.
about
5 minutes later the doc. Came in, talked for two minutes, and out he went to get ready.
5 minutes later, whisked into operating room. I asked how long the procedure would take, the nurse said that the inserting of the seeds takes about
15 minutes. Huh, that’s it? Yep!
You lay on a table that has somewhat of an
opening in the middle, your arms are on crosses, one with IV, the other with BP, oxygen, etc. They make you nice and warm, and 5 minutes later max the anthologist says, time to go to sleep.
Next thing I know I’m waking up in another room asking the nurse if it was Thursday, even though it was Friday. Don’t remember a thing.
I have an ice pack between my legs, a cup of ice to eat and boy was I spaced out for 10 minutes.
After about
45 mins I’m no longer out of it, and the nurse asks if I’m ready to pee as it’s my ticket out of there. Off to bathroom, pee like crazy, no real problems there.
Into another area where they have a basket of munchies, man was I hungry. Ate all sorts of stuff.
Oh yeah, you have the IV in until pretty much right before you leave the facility.
The nurse that was there when I woke up sat down and went over all the meds which consists of Prednisone, Flomax and antibiotics. She also went over all sorts of material which she gave to me later.
At one point she asked what the scale of pain was, for me a 5 where needles were inserted. She asked me if I want extra strength Tylenol or Vicodin, I took Tylenol. One thing to note, they do not numb the area where the needles are inserted, so when you wake up and the drugs wear off, that’s the pain you will feel. They don’t want you leaving saying everything is great because your area below in numb, then you calling 3 hours later in lots of pain.
5 minutes later the doctor specializing in radiation came over and explained all about
the seeds, etc. She then placed a Giger counter next to my crotch, and about
3 feet away to measure radiation.
After that she wheeled me into a room where she took an x-ray to check on seed placement.
I was then wheeled back, ate some more goodies, doctor came over and said everything went great and I’m out of there when the nurses say I can leave. That was about
10 mins later. IV out, get dressed, walk to front desk and make appointment for CT scan one month later.
The whole process took 3 hours.
Okay, so I was given 72 iodine seeds inserted using 18 needles which was termed a Brachy boost, this equaled out to 108 grays.
Pain and SE’s…
Anyone who says that having 18 needles stuck in you and doesn’t have any pain is downright lying unless you have a very high tolerance to pain. This is not a constant pain, its only when you sit down and move the wrong direction. Standing up and walking is fine, but it’s sore for sure. They want you to ice every two hours for 24 hours after procedure, I’m just about
at that mark, and it helps for sure. Tylenol helps as well.
Peeing… I have not started taking the Flomax, because I have not had an issue yet. Yes, its not like it was the day before, but it doesn’t burn. Stream is weaker, feels a little weird when I start and stop, but that’s it for now. But the nurse said a few times that urinary issues will get worse starting in about
1 week when the radiation really kicks in, so don’t think that you are out of the water and that everything is hunky-dory. But in the meantime, I’m taking pomegranate extract.
That’s about
it for now, will update on se’s and what not down the road.
Peace out!
P.S. Did I write that everyone was super nice and helpful? Because the experience could not have been better from a standpoint of staff and even the facility.
