AMS 800 surgery -- any experience with existing cognitive problems in the patient?

Hello, I am new to the forum. My brother has cognitive/memory problems and wants this surgery for his incontinence. He lives in an Assisted Living apt. and would have access to help from nursing staff.
I'm looking for people with experience with a patient who has had this surgery for an AMS 800 artificial urinary sphincter. Did the patient succeed with being able to operate this device after surgery? Thank you.

ANY surgery with general anesthesia poses a risk for someone with cognitive issues--which is one of the dirty secrets that don't get carefully explained to either patients or their POA signers. There are many anectdotal reports-and some published studies-that look at this.

Anesthesia is not harmless--and the long term affects, particularly on the elderly or cognitively challenged, are rarely discussed. I have seen it--and I know that anecdotal evidence isn't evidence.

I left a reply for the OP in another AUS thread. He asked the same question in two threads and hasn't been back since. There is a special AUS with a remote control to be operated by a caregiver for those patients who are incapacitated. The link was posted by username "Banff" in one of the AUS threads on the CSN prostate forum. That forum is not easily searchable and there are many AUS threads there, so I have not bothered to hunt for it. If the OP returns and is interested in the RC-AUS I'll do it, but not going to waste my time otherwise.
