Hello all, I haven't posted here for almost two years, but I lurk periodically. I was a patient of Dr Myers, until he retired, and on his PSA suppression program. He had me taking avodart and the following supplements; curcummin, resveratrol, vitamin d3 (5000 iu) and pomegranate extract in capsule form. He also had me taking metformin, but it really upset my stomach and I stopped it. I haven't thought about changing the supplements and it has been over 2 years since I have seem Myers. I was hoping to get an update here from those of you who take supplements based upon your doctors recommendations. Any information would be appreciated.

I currently try to maintain a Mediterranean diet with very little red meat and a lot of unsweetened green tea, I try to get fish oil through diet.

Thanks for the info on Berberine. I am checking it out, I can buy this on a reputable on-line site for a reasonable price.
Hoping that I would hear from some forum members that had supplements recommended by there medical oncologists.

So the famous Dr. Myers prescribed all of those supplements for you? Gee, didn't he know that certain authorities here have decalared some of those useless? ;)

FWIW, I have taken Berberine on and off for years. There were some studies showing it to have about the same effect on blood sugar and insulin resistance as Metformin, but with fewer SEs. Some folks think that blood insulin levels have an influence on all cancers, PC included, which is one reason why Metformin is helpful with PC. I don't have those exact studies right now, but did see these:

This is not a good place to come for supplement advice.
I've had many battles, locked threads, scolded multiple times, called all kinds of things, even kicked off for merely suggesting that a statement like this should be of interest to people here -

Go somewhere else for that.

Bubba, here's the thing. Those who want to post respectfully and within the rules are welcome to do so. There is some controversy about diet and supplements and statements are often challenged. As long as both the original statements and the challenges are done within the rules it's A-OK with the moderators. You were edited/deleted and occasionally locked by multiple moderators because you chose to ignore the rules. You were never "kicked off" for suggesting statements of interest. That is blatantly untrue. If you are not happy posting here within the rules you are also welcome to go elsewhere. If you want to follow the forum rules you are welcome to stay.

Well thats just not true. I have one single reason for ever being here, only one. There are things out there that can help people here. Thats it. Nothing else. No hidden agenda, I don't sell anything. I don't work for anyone selling anything.
You(mods) always took his side, no one could say boo to him without a locked thread, or scolding or both. It wasn't just me. I admit I did lose my patience a few times, but only because I wasn't permitted to speak.
He is gone now, how many arguments, dust ups, locked threads, have there been? Please answer this, I've asked a few times. I'm sure you have some numbers for that.
I told him to go somewhere else for supplement advice, does that break a rule?
Someone prove me wrong and give BB_fan some great supplement advice... I'll wait.

Sorry to cause a ruckus. Just wanted input from any other members who have doctors that recommend supplements and what those supplements are. I don't advocate for supplements and honestly probably would not take any unless recommended by a doctor. Most doctors do recommend supplements in my experience. Before PC treatment my GP was having me take a multivitamin and baby aspirin daily.

Myers recommended resveratrol because he didn't think it would be a good idea to drink a bottle of red wine daily. The vit D3 was recommended because my D level was low and he wanted me to get it up without spending a lot of time in the sun. When I asked him about fish oil, he said "just eat more fish".

In any event, I guess I will just continue with what I am doing. Thanks for the information on berberine Bubatc and BillyBob. I will probably add it.

Its not your fault at all BB, this is all mine.
As Tudpock correctly said there is some controversy about diet and supplements but that shouldn't mean we cant talk about it.

@BB...your posts are fine and hopefully you will get some helpful answers.

@Bubba...enough with the free speech stuff. You can have free speech here as long as it doesn't violate forum rules. Period. End of story. BTW, we don't keep stats on locked threads and even if we did it's not the mods jobs to answer your random questions that have nothing to do with prostate cancer. Now chill out.

BB_fan, I'm all for supplements if your doctor has recommended them. I've tried a number to varying degrees of success. I don't know enough on the subject to make any specific recommendations. At the moment I only do vit-D and some diet changes (no sugar, gluten, low carb). and that's working for me. Each person will respond different so my plan might not work for you.

and you're not the one causing a ruckus...

Have not seen you since a while. I recall when you first posted somewhere else early on in your travel (I think). I, too was with Myers and when I transferred to Dr Drake at Columbia Presby he was fine with Metformin, to whatever dose I could accept, currently 500-750 mg/day. Also atorvastatin and dutasteride. D3 cholecalciferol at 10,000 iu/day was a longstanding practice from before I met Myers and is for general health of all kinds. I continue it. I tried some of the other supplements along the way and have abandoned them as their "proof" was limited and my bath counter space was also limited. I was on tocopherol (Vit E) with pentoxyfillene for radiation fibrosis from my RT 7 years ago for mets in hip. I will continue it when pain returns but am currently off.

You are free to start your own internet site. That's what the 1st amendment of the US Constitution affirms (as applied today, and protected by ACLU and many others). Within broad limitations, you can pretty much say anything you want there.

You are NOT free to go onto someone else's internet site and seek protection from being barred after violating the published rules. That is NOT protected by the 1st amendment. My site; I make the rules. Your site; you make the rules. Each of us is protected in that way by the 1st amendment.

Getting ready to start Lupron in a few weeks and have read where Metformin boosts the effectiveness of the Lupron. Is the group saying that berberine(?) works just as well or just as well keeping blood sugars low?

No, no one is saying that, take the Metformin if you can. Berberine is an just an ok substitute if you can't tolerate Metformin.
The well respected member hated this site but he is gone and they have good info about this.

Bubba, May I suggest that you are spending more time on what you percieved happened in the past, than you are trying to answer the OP question.

As Tud mentioned. You are free to express your opinion on anything here, just stay within the rules, and stay away from inflammatory comments about the mods towards any other member. Try ignoring anyone that flames you. They usually go away after that.
Just focus on the question posed. Ignore everything else. You will have way less issues with that approach.

You are 100% correct, no need for bringing up the past. I was telling him why he wont get advice, I went a bit too far. Except I disagree on the perceived part, there was more than a perceived problem. I cant count many locked threads since he left.

Doesn't matter, no response needed, i'm out for a while at least.

Tarhoosier, thanks for the information. I am now seeing Dr Petrylak at Yale/NewHaven. He didn't recommend metformin, avodart or the supplements that I was taking, but didn't suggest that I stop either. I liked Myer a lot and he was good about explaining why I should take the supplements that he was recommending. I guess that I "drank the cool-aid" on supplements after seeing him for a few years. The fact that I still have an undetectable PSA makes me reluctant to stop. I wouldn't have a problem drinking more red wine and stopping the resveratrol.

I'll wade in briefly--

My take is this: done carefully, as part of a healthy living plan, supplements won't hurt you. The key is done carefully. This means use good quality products with USP approvals, and really pay attention to what literature there is out there, particularly the discussions of adverse effects when different things are mixed together. Whether they actually HELP is a whole different discussion--and one where real scientific evidence is really hard to find.

The other side of it is to be really attentive to literature that discusses those supplements that are proven to cause harm. (There are some). And don't fall into the trap of thinking that if a little is ok, a lot will be better. As in anything you put into your body, dosage is a huge deal, whether we're talking prescription drugs, supplements, food, drink, whatever.

To the controversy--on this forum we tend to be a peaceful bunch. People who come in with chips on their shoulders who are daring the rest of us to knock it off will be obliged. Carrying around a resentment about it only hurts the one with the resentment, not the rest of us.
