My husband is getting his biopsy tomorrow am at UCLA. He really wants to work on Friday … Is there any pain associated with biopsy?

It’s going vary from guy to guy. I had mine done late in the morning and was able to return to work straight from the doctor’s office. Probably wiser to plan on taking the whole day off.

I agree with mattamx.. can vary. He maybe able to take off Thursday and work on Friday if he is having the standard trans rectal biopsy. You feel uncomfortable for a while but he could work if he is in an office. I can’t recall if the docs office warned not to do heavy lifting. I had 4 biopsies over the course of a year so you would think I would remember. 😂

I took the day off b/c I'm a wimp and I was drugged. Everyone is different.

Pain varies a lot from man to man and doc to doc. I had little pain and only took the day of the biopsy off.
I didn't use any pain control during the procedure other than a local the doc administered.

It also depends what kind of job he has. With a desk job, he'd likely be fine. With heavy physical job, he'd be at least uncomfortable and possibly unable to work.

Honestly, best to make the decision about working on Friday, on Friday morning.

He may be fine, but he won't know until Friday. Either way, he should be good to go on Monday.

In my case, any significant pain or discomfort was only during the procedure but you know you had something done for a day or so. There can be some pain depending on where they are sampling as I found out with my MRI guided biopsy although most samples are pretty easy. There is also the issue of blood showing everywhere for a couple of days that may make someone feel odd after going to the bathroom at work the next day if they did not expect it.

I've had two biopsies with nerve blocks, and gone about my normal business right afterwards both times (errands one day, and back to work on the other). Both times I had a strong, dull, deep pain in the prostate area after the nerve block wore off, but Tylenol helped with that and I was able to function well even the day of the biopsy. Based on that your husband should be in good shape to go to work the day after the biopsy. (But give him a heads-up to not freak out over blood, especially from ejaculations.)

I went back to work the next day. But he might want to wear the thin depends shields for a few days to keep blood off his clothes. I had the unpleasant experience of passing a big clot 6 hours or so after biopsy--it was enough to block things until I had enough pressure build up in my bladder--there was the thought about having to run into the ER for a catheter.

Yea, be prepared for bloody urine for a couple of days, and for bloody (gradually turning black) ejaculate for at least a week or two.

I was fine the next day to go to work. They used a anesthetic that didn't knock me out,but really didn't feel anything and they said it would make me forget most of what happened. He told me to take the rest of the day off and don't make any decisions or drive. I have to make decisions at work so that was out even if I wanted to. I was fine the next day.

Blood in urine was not bad. It would start reddish, and gradually turn clear as you finished. I did leak a little on the sheet at night. Probably not urine, but ejaculate. Scared wife to death the first time we played afterward even though the doc told us about it. Be prepared for that.

Watch carefully over the next few days for signs of an infection--watch for fever, chills, aches, urgent need to urinate or burning urination. Most men never experience the issue, but if observed seek medical attention promptly. Rates of occurrence following prostate biopsy are up to about 15%, as recently published by Mayo; nearly half of those require hospitalization within 30 days. Can be caused by either e-coli or sepsis. Many men here at this site have experienced this. Preemptive antibiotics can reduce but does not eliminate the risk.

When I made the decision to have a biopsy they had a cancellation and got me in right there and then. A friend had told me about how bad it would be based on his experience and I really didn't have time to psyche up. The uro explained what was going to happen and shot in a bit of lidocaine and then proceeded. The discomfort wasn't that bad but it was stressful, mostly from anticipating the next snap of the device. When I got home all I wanted to do was have a bit of herbal remedy to mellow me out and that helped. The next day it was back to life as usual. I went on a 6 mile run two days after the procedure with no problems.

I've said before that the really worst part was the cipro shot in the hip. The nurse came and chatted, noted I was allergic to penicillin, and walked out. She came back in with a syringe, told me it was an antibiotic, and as I rolled my sleeve she laughed and said, nope, come over here and drop trou.

THAT hurt for over a week.

Thanks guys. He did great... in true form he was joking the entire time. He even made the very stern faced doctor chuckle. My husband is so inspiring... he has the most amazing attitude. I am so incrediblly blessed to have him . Please pray for him that Wednesday brings good news.. He is too young for this crap.
