Abiraterone Costs vs. Zytiga

Changed to Abiraterone (generic Zytiga) this month. Similar looking pill. Comes in a hazardous labeled bag instead of labeled chemotherapy drug. Cost for Abiraterone $8,490 Cost for Zytiga $9,883. Both a one month supply of 120 pills at 250 mg each. Co pay is $50 for both. Wow only a $1,400 difference.

I thought this would be of interest.

I have read (!) that when a drug 'goes generic' the price may not drop much during the first year. Later on though, the price may drop substantially. I believe (!) that agreements between the original manufacturer and the generic maker play a role in all of this.

Actually, for us, the generic was more expensive than Zytiga ... so, staying with the name brand right now. Go figure ....

Hello ~

Ironically, as others have discovered, the generic version of ZYTIGA would cost me more out-of-pocket than name brand ZYTIGA --- at least at this current time.

My doctor changed the ZYTIGA prescription to state "no substitutions" at the current time, to save me the higher out-of-pocket cost for the generic ---- at least for right now.

It goes against common sense, I realize --- live, and learn!
