Researchers evaluated the benefit of androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) plus docetaxel after primary local therapy and high-risk factors in patients with rising levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), but no evidence of metastatic disease. For this open-label, phase 3, randomized superiority trial, study participants were randomly assigned to receive ADT (1 year) plus docetaxel, 70 mg/m2 (every 3 weeks [6 cycles]), or ADT alone (1 year). In total, 254 patients were randomized (1:1) to the ADT plus docetaxel arm (median age, 64 years) and the ADT alone arm (median age, 66 years). Compared to ADT alone, in patients with high-risk prostate cancer and rising PSA levels and no evidence of metastatic disease, combined ADT plus docetaxel therapy with curative intent did not significantly improve PSA progression-free survival. Neutropenia, febrile neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia were the most common grade 3 or 4 hematologic toxic effects in the ADT plus docetaxel arm.

Dosetaxel is nasty stuff..The Neutropenia in the hands and feet is serious business, the nerves are killed and they don't recover.. Your feet (especially) and your hands can become numb and tingley and they stay stay that way..In severe cases it can crippling. Plus the hair loss..You will probably lose all your hair...
Dosazitaxel, Jevtana, worked better for me (I've done them both) without the severe side effects. However, you will probably need to take pegfilgrastim (self-injected) three days after a treatment infusion. The side-effects from that drug (a white blood cell booster) are worse than the Dosazitaxel....

Fairwind, I think what you are talking about here is neuropathy which is different than Neutropenia. I have pretty bad neuropathy in my feet and a little in my hands as a result of my docetaxel treatment. I still have neuropathy 2 years post chemo. You are right that it is nasty stuff. I also lost my hair, but that has come back

I ended up in the hospital for a couple of days with neutropenia which is low white blood cell counts and fever that can lead to infection and in some cases sepsis.
Redwing 57 posted a study about a month ago showing no significant effect upon having Docetaxel as adjuvant therapy, but as I said back then,if I knew what I know now I would not have done the docetaxel

It seems they've been going back and forth with what might be the optimum timing of taxane chemo for PCa. Initially it was a last resort Hail Mary, just short of radium 223. Then it was moved to standard practice following RT in the case of LNI. Then for a short while it was adjuvant therapy following RP, then just recently it was decided that taxotere did no good. Again, I may have some of the timing wrong (I usually do), but that's what I've noticed just over the past few years.
