Does anyone else here also have Hashimoto's? My husband was diagnosed many years ago after suffering repeated bouts of idiopathic urticaria and angioedema. He was initially treated for allergies with minimal resolution. I finally landed on a small research study linking IU to Hashimoto's. We connected with an excellent research doc who formally diagnosed him and convinced his internal med doc to start him on thyroid replacement therapy. He went through a really long period of good symptom control after the initiation of Synthroid and Ketotifen to help with the hives. Starting this past August, around the time of his surgery, he began with some recurrence of hives. His blood work showed an increased TSH and antithyroid antibodies, so his Synthroid dose was increased and he returned to a pretty controlled state. Since starting his ADT in December, he has continued to have outbreaks of hives that he can control a bit with Ranitidine and Zyrtec. Recently had repeat bloodwork - TSH off the scale again and antibodies also increased, Increased his Synthroid again. The autoimmune disease is burning up his thyroid pretty quickly. He will be seeing a new endocrinologist (I requested as I feel this is getting beyond the IM doc's ability). He seemed to flare more during the SRT. He has a lot going on in his body right now with the rad therapy induced cellular damage and the effects of ADT. Just curious if anyone else here has gone through something similar with Hahimoto's and what may have been helpful. He's being a trooper with the hives and the drug changes, but I also know the hives are miserable and hate seeing him deal with this too.

Hi Nytngale,

I have been on sythroid for many years (20+). Never symptomatic though. I check TSH regularly and have adjusted dose a number of times. I hope your husband can stay ahead of thyroid function changes in the future. I believe it can be a relatively easy condition to treat - at least has been for me.

Unfreaking believable. As if you/he don't have enough on your plate. Since you are already going to The James have you looked for an endocrinologist in Cbus? I'm of course thinking of your shopping & dining needs. smile

Thanks, guys. You're right, Bucks - he really doesn't need this right now. I think in this symptom ramp up is in good part due to the inflammatory responses ramped up by surgery, ADT, and radiation. We did discuss an endo in CBus, Bucks (definitely a great option when shopping and dining are involved), but hubby nixed that one because he wants to try and minimize the travel a bit due to his work schedule. He did get a call from the local endo today (I worked with this guy for many years when I was still an ICU nurse - he is excellent and I trust him) and he boosted the Synthroid a tad and is going to get labs again in 3 weeks when we return from vacation. I hope we can get back into remission. The urticaria presentation is relatively uncommon and I thought maybe someone had gone through something similar. Looking forward to a getaway for us both - out to Yellowstone for some hiking, peace in the outdoors, and some wildlife photo ops - a favorite past time of mine.

Staying local makes a lot of sense especially if you know & trust your Doc. Hopefully you'll get it solved. Enjoy the mountains-my happy place. 1 day before we went to Colorado in Oct 2017 I received my scan results showing multiple mets. I chose not to tell my wife so we could enjoy our vacation. Even with the news I was relaxed and soaked in the mountain freshness. Would love to see your pics. Have a great getaway!

So - my father whose in his 80's has Hashimotos

When he was on replacement therapy he got worse.

What helped him was a homeopathic doctor... I thought it was all rubbish at first, even told my mom she was killing my dad (it was her idea) ... but then 6 months later, he was dramatically improved.

Thanks for the info Zzarth. Replacement helped my husband into a long remission. This time, not so much. Will be doing some reading on the homeopathic route as well.
