Thank you Bohemond for the diversion. I think about my wife and kids a lot, but after that... I would ski all winter and hike all summer. Being outdoors relaxes me, and lets me forget about cancer and any other worries.

SP - Never heard of Paul Bley, nice piano style with a couple of legends, thanks.

My Mom and Dad got me into Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Benny, Ella, etc at a young age so it has been sort of down hill from there, just kidding. Love good guitar and piano as a result though.

Paul Hanson is a beast on that bassoon or whatever it is, just keeps it going. There are a lot of musical mutants that I cannot figure out, will never be me but love watching and listening to them.

1:Hammock camping/backpacking, i.e. sleeping in a hammock, rather than on a pad on the ground, when I pack in somewhere
2: The art/science of staying warm in a hammock, much trickier than when on a pad on the ground
3: Off trail travel via map and compass or, when lazy, by GPS

My obsession is quail hunting with my son, grandson and hopefully my great grandson. We all have pointing dogs that I help train and compete with. We trial the dogs. A trial entails walking to keep up with your running dog for 30 minutes at full speed, up and down hilly terrain. We finished 8 trials over the last three days. It keeps me in shape.

oldbeek, I’m no hunter, but that sounds like a wonderful pastime. Would drop whatever I was doing and try to tag along with you at a moment’s notice.

2019guy— that’s one of the most musically satisfying renditions of the Tchaikovsky I’ve ever heard. Blew me away. Thanks.

2019guy - Another musical mutant, the accordion and banjo can be most annoying if not played well. This is some good playing.

I heard John Sebastian Sr. (father of Lovin' Spoonful Sebastian) play classical harmonica accompanied by piano in college. Another one of those experiences where I could not understand how anyone could play like that with a working man's instrument. Thanks for the link.

For me, it is computer games. I play them and watch others play them online. Have made lots of friends that way and passed literally thousands of hours. Also my dog. He is my first and we are constantly together. We can't get out and walk quite as much or as far as we used to but we still are best buddies and manage to love whatever we can do.

For me it is travel. During my freshman year at my public college, 1961-62, I saw my first "foreign" film courtesy of our student film group. Black and white, subtitles, cranky projector, lousy sound system, and I was enthralled. I think it was a French "New Wave Film," or perhaps a Kurosawa or Fellini. In the event, I knew this was for me and that I had to see these places. My first teaching "gig" out of college was in the Virgin Islands, and I haven't stopped travelling since. As time has gone by I am less drawn to the islands and great nature in general, then I am to great cities with deep overlays of history, language, culture, religion, architecture and art. Fortunately my wife is the only person I know who loves travel more than I do, so we are very compatible. And she loves all things art. No "bucket" list as such -- we just talk for months sometimes until the next travel destination emerges. We never rent cars while abroad, and use public transport and walk whenever we can. We just spent a month this past winter in Mexico City. Many friends were puzzled about why we would do that, but we loved the city -- and felt we still had not quite done it all. A while back I was curious about me, and drew up two parallel lists of the states and countries I have visited in my life time. The countries "won" by a margin of 51 to 35. No travel today, however. A day of lawn and grounds beckons, made robust by incessant rains this spring here in the Northeast. I would gladly surrender my lawn before surrendering travel.

Audio... not necessarily music, but AUDIO. My father was an audiophile in the 50-60's, and like many GI's I brought back some pricey European gear upon my ETS. That gear lasted well into the 90's and turned my wife and sons into audiophiles.

Eventually the "HT" or home theater bug hit me and sold off my vintage stuff and bought higher end digital equipment. Had to downsize when we moved to our retirement condo and still have a storage locker full of HT gear that is now too heavy for me to even lift anymore... thanks to the "other HT" I've been on in recent years. Still have decent setups in the LR and BR of our condo, and chose concrete construction and plush carpeting for acoustics.

We still watch movies occasionally, but not like we did before Lupron. Now I prefer to just chill with New Age music. I love to relax and let my mind wander. Anymore it's all I can do to focus my mind on a plot. If you want to talk New Age I do have some favorite artists, but for the most part I don't know names.

Also I moderate a few cancer support groups. These online prostate forums sometimes cause more anguish than I feel I deserve, so I may just disappear now and then. Though I do not belong to any prostate groups on FB, there's just a few general cancer forums, more focused on survivorship than those in the heat of battle. Plus some groups for other medical problems. Prior to my sclerosing mesenteritis Dx last fall I had never used FB before, but this disease is so rare that there are no other support groups for it anywhere.

Some may say that I spend too much time in my own head. So who's head should I be in?

BBQ used to be my biggest thing. I used to travel around doing BBQ competitions until it got to be a little too expensive. In 2010 we competed in 9 competitions in 6 states. We cooked in the Kansas City BBQ Society competitions. That year there were a little over 5000 teams that competed. We finished #88 in chicken and #122 in ribs. Overall there are 4 meats you smoke and our final spot when you added all 4 together was somewhere around #250.

I still love to put meat on the smoker, but as I now travel every other week for work it makes it harder to find time to get something on the smoker and taking the necessary time to make it stand out as best ever to people who get to eat it.

I am also addicted to Jack Reacher books, and Ted Bell books in the Blackhawk series.

Travel is my other addiction. We did white water rafting down the Ocoee river over Memorial weekend. Have a trip to tube the Current River in Mark Twain National Forest this summer and a Cancun trip to a resort with no kids allowed over Labor day week. The no kid thing is important as we have 13 grand-kids all within about 45 miles of us and that can get kind of abused (can you watch them at a moments notice) so getting away from kids every now and then does a soul some good.
