Fasting and Cancer

I'm wondering if anybody on this form has experience with fasting and it's possible relation to cancer. I've been reading Thomas Seyfried's book, 'Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer' as well as Dr. Jason Fung's book on fasting.

Seyfried subscribes to the theory that cancer can be effected by lowering glucose. That's a simplification as the book reads more like a medical school text to me so it's a slow slog. Apparently there are two camps in the medical/research community (Seyfried is a researcher at Boston College), the metabolic approach that began with Dr. Otto Warburg where he won a nobel in 1931 and the genetic approach which I believe is currently the model in the medical and research community.

Seyfried recommends fasting and other books on this topic say that it 'could' positively affect cancers, even PC.

Intermittent fasting is a great thing for routine health and can be part of a good diet plan.

Fasting to stop cancer is another one of those, "Gee wished this worked" things. It doesn't.

Reducing insulin, losing weight, are all good things that help fight cancer, but they won't cure it.

I'd read it several weeks ago. Gorski seems like a smart guy and apparently is in the oncology field so his opinion should be respected. I thought he was a bit hard on Seyfried because many of his claims had yet to undergo clinical trials but I understand it. I'll certainly be anxious to see trail results.

There is a fair amount of evidence, don’t ask me to cite it I can’t, but I’ve read it, that says that insulin spikes feed cancer growth. Billy Bob none of our members talks about this often if you Google his post you’ll find lots of deep discussion. Intermittent fasting according to Jason Fung is helpful in Helping insulin sensitivity and avoiding insulin spikes.
Assuming this is all true, and that’s a big assumption, then I suppose intermittent fasting might help someone slow down the growth rate. But there’s no way in my opinion that it’s going to cure anything

Think about this. Androgen deprivation therapy otherwise known as hormone therapy, drives down testosterone to castrate levels, and prostate cancer feeds on testosterone, but it’s well known that this process does not cure cancer it only stops it from growing for a period of time.
So do you think controlling insulin is going to do a better job and cure cancer? Not possible

With that said if you believe in the theory and it’s not gonna hurt you no harm in trying as long as you don’t use it as a substitute for traditional care but as an adjunct

I find it odd that a discussion of the merits of fasting in the context of its effects on prostate cancer has turned to the discussion of Ben Wa balls. (Paltrow's jade eggs are not, actually, a new thing.) But life is often odd.
For both topics I would observe that, in the absence of any particularly compelling scientific evidence one way or the other, one is more or less free to decide for oneself. One of the bases of English common law is that "anything that is not forbidden is allowed" and I think that with due caution it it can be applied to both topics.
The evidence for fasting (or ketogenic diets) doing anything helpful for prostate cancer is thin (and thinking that you can cure your prostate cancer by skipping lunch is silly) but neither is there any evidence suggesting harm. Fasting does seem to be a useful way for some people to lose weight and, judging from those of you I've met, it wouldn't hurt most of us to lose a few pounds.
