Lisa,
I'm sure you already know that circulation problems in the legs, especially blood clots, often go along with spending too much time in bed. I imagine your dad knows it, too. If he spent more time being active he'd feel better. And, of course, if he felt better it would be easier to do more. That's the maddening thing about dealing with loved ones who are depressed -- the vicious circle, the less they feel like doing the more depressed they get and the more depressed they are the less they want to do. You know that if they could just somehow get over it -- break the loop and get out and about and do stuff -- the depression would let up and they'd be over it.
You've mentioned before that your dad is being treated for the depression and is still struggling. The only hopeful thing I can say is that depressive episodes don't last forever. Sooner or later depressed people usually seem to bottom out and start to get better. Once things turn around the vicious circle turns into a positive reinforcement loop where the more they do, the more they realize they want to do, and they gradually feel better.
In the meanwhile take care of yourself. Keep us posted and we will continue to offer sympathy, company, support and highly questionable opinions on things medical.
