Hi all - really concerned that zytiga now has a generic version...looks like this will be taking over. Anyone get the word yet? It better be just as good if not better. Ugh!

Hello Stefanie,
In 2019 my Aetna Insurance would not cover the cost of Brand name Zytiga, by Jenseen, and would only cover the cost of generic substitutes. I have been on three different Abiraterone Acetate generic brands, one made in America by Patriot Labs, one made in Canada by Apotex and one made in India by Novadoz labs.
I was skeptical, but my first class Oncologist assured me they all have the exact same chemical make up. and will all be as effective. The quality control issue may be a slight concern. However, after being on Zytiga for 54 months, at undetectable, I continue to be undetectable on the other three generics for the past 9 months. So my advice is no need to worry. Others will chime in soon I am sure. Just keep the faith!

Agree with Wings. No problem on generic since last summer.

I will echo my comrades GoBucks and Wings of Eagles ...
Many of us here on name brand ZYTIGA were switched over to the generic version, due to the new availability of the generic.
For most of us, it was a cost saving measure, as our work insurance transferred us over to the generic version.
My oncologist and pharmacist both reassure me that the efficacy of the generic is just as potent as the name brand medication.
Many of us here have been on the generic version now for many months. I have no reservations about
taking the generic version.
I have been on ZYTIGA (and now the generic version) for over 55 months total. It has become part of my daily routine.
Check with your doctor, pharmacist, and insurance company for cost savings options that can greatly reduce your monthly medication cost, through cost savings programs offered to patients taking ZYTIGA or the newer generic version.
Wishing you all the best,

Identical chemical structure is just that - identical chemical structure. There could minor differences in purity or inactive ingredients. I wouldn't be surprised if on occasion medications shipped out as generics are made in the same "factory" as name brands.

I have been on the generic form of zytiga since December 2018. It has been just as effective for me as the brand name version. The first year it was out, it was still quite expensive albeit one third the cost of Zytiga. However this year the cost has come down significantly to the point where it is quite affordable. I actually told my pharmacist that i could afford to stay alive.

Almost a 10 will be here all week everybody. Be sure to try the pot roast and don't forget to tip your waiters.

My Blue Shield insurance also insisted on generic. While I was on their Gold PPO policy, my cost was $10/month with the subsidy from manufacturer. Now I am on Medicare, my RX policy is still with Blue Shield but my cost for generic version will be about
$800/month I believe, though I haven’t bought any yet as I just finished my Zytiga a year ago. May have to restart again and not looking forward to paying that much per month.

An additional anecdote ... somewhat ironic ...
These days, now that I am on the generic version of Zytiga, the pharmacy will occasionally send me name brand Zytiga, when they have run out of the generic version, for the same copay cost of the generic!
In my mind, this reconfirms that the two versions are interchangeable.
Just an additional anecdote,

Thank you all. I can always count on this lovely group. I wish you all so much love & blessings. My dad was upset that it wouldn't be as effective. He has G9 Mets and said it was the "800 Pound Gorilla". He said "Steffy my life is on the line...but I can't worry about
what I can't control". He asked me to reach out to the guys on the forum...he hasn't worked up the nerve to come on yet. I told him it is a great group & they will welcome you as they have eased my mind and welcomed me. I can always count on you all. We are waiting for a new scan in April on the bones...see how the Lupron & Zytiga is working then possible Radiation. I feel better on the generic issue....XXXXOOOOO

Hello Stefanie,
You have received several first hand accounts from members who have switched over to the generic version of Zytiga.
I wanted to share something new with you and your dad.
I just completed a brand new series of tests and scans at Mayo Clinic.
These new scans showed that things are staying on track, even after switching to the generic version of Zytiga several months ago.
I should also tell you that my local oncologist checks in with me every month, like clockwork.
He also charts my PSA levels each month from the lab.
These experiences have shown me that the generic version of Zytiga has continued to help me, in my particular case.
With my best to you and your dad,

Ditto the other brothers—been on generic for over a year. Good luck with yours.
