Fake web news reports on the coronavirus (OT)

C'mon guys, this was originally a chat about the virus--making swipes about this being a great way to finish off a city or "deal with the homeless population" is going too far. Seriously.

Bottom line, like any suddenly appearing 'new' illness--particularly a virus--the biggest issue is the ratio of things we don't know vs things we do know. And, whether we like it or not, the recent (last 20 years recent, ok?) development of information silos, along with wide acceptance of internet-based information that is frequently questionable at best--and never mind the years long drumbeat on both political sides that says that "official information" is always questionable at best and typically a flat out lie makes this a massive problem. Who do you trust? What information do you believe?

All of which IS important for any group of people to have a conversation about.

As I said, in the above post, it was the city itself that found that 1 in 3 want out (the actual stat is 35%). If anyone has an issue with the city's survey email them about it. The old cliché don't shoot the messenger seems appropriate here.

I don't see the point of acting incredulous at an uncomfortable statement of fact.

There are other stats in the article, or the links to other stories in it: 50% of San Francisco residents are financially insecure, for seven years in a row more people have left California than came in, so many people are leaving the Bay Area that there are U-Haul shortages.

Further, I never tied the decline of San Francisco, and California, to COVID-19. The virus won't help, but that decline happened long before the virus ever knocked on our doors.

Just to be clear: I said "It will indeed be interesting when the Covid 19 hits the LA and SF homeless areas. Then again, I wonder how that goes in those areas for the regular flu?". But this was in no way a swipe at the homeless population. All I'm saying is anytime any infectious disease becomes established under conditions such as we see among the homeless camps, it is going to be bad. Or it seems to me it will be. I think that is a simple factual and logical statement. The hygiene is already pretty low under those circumstances. It just seems as though it might spread faster than normal there. It would also seem extra risky on a cruise ship, but at least lot's of hand washing and possibly some quarantine would probably be easier to accomplish. Maybe.

Government in general has never been able to turn on a dime and respond quickly to fast moving events this big.

Yes, we hope warmer weather tamps this down. I am not sure it will as there is spread in warmer places right now.

New cases in China, thanks to their outstanding public health measures, have dropped significantly. They've bought us time. I sure hope we use that time.

Dear Everett Public School Families –

We wanted to be the first to let you know the Snohomish Health District notified us tonight we have a case of Coronavirus, or COVID-19, involving one of our schools. A Jackson High School student has tested presumptive positive for the virus, and we have been in ongoing communication with the Department of Health and the Snohomish Health District to determine how we should proceed.

The student was not in school most of this week, but was on campus briefly this morning. The few students they were in contact with have been notified and will remain home for 14 days with symptom monitoring by the Snohomish Health District. The student has a sibling at Gateway Middle School who is not symptomatic, but out of an abundance of caution, is being tested and will remain out of school in quarantine until tests results are back.

We are taking this very seriously and as a precautionary measure we have decided to close Jackson High School on Monday, March 2, so we have three days for deep disinfecting.

We will continue to follow the authorities’ recommendations on how to proceed and keep all of our student’s healthy. This is a rapidly-changing situation, but please be assured the health and safety of our students are of utmost importance and we will keep everyone informed.

Regarding people wanting to leave San Francisco, this is nothing new. I am from the Los Angeles area and 30-some years ago that was the big discussion due to increased crowds, traffic congestion, and increasing home prices. It was a common conversation about what one’s plans were to “escape.” It was like the weather: everyone talked about it but no one did anything about it.

Although I loved LA, had a great job but a crummy commute, I wanted to make a career change (from engineering to education) and with another kid on the way I really needed a larger house and with the pay cut I would take I would be priced out of the market. So I made my escape plan: back to college to get a teaching license, comb the country for a good place to raise kids where houses were less expensive, someplace that wasn’t sweltering in the summers (that I would have off from work), big enough for some economic efficiency, and no congestion. I landed a teaching job in Montana and never looked back. Most everyone who I knew in LA is still there, still talking about that escape plan.

I assume it’s the same old story in San Francisco.

Vince we decided to get out of California much the same as you: the traffic, the cost of living, the schools (size of classrooms was 45 when my kids were in the SFV schools, a teacher and an aide = your kid gets the shaft), the quality of life, etc. Many people that work in the Bay Area can't afford to live in the Bay Area (and I am talking about people making six figures, see https://www.vox.com/2019/3/19/18256378/tech-worker-afford-buy-homes-san-francisco-facebook-google-uber-lyft-housing-crisis-programmers). When we left LA people were converting garages into "homes" to beat the cost, also into rental units. I remember the old joke "Detroit is so bad even the rats are leaving" but now California has become the place of broken dreams.
