Coronavirus affecting April/May Decisions

Thank God they are going to cancel. Imagine the spread of virus to people at such events.

Wintering in Florida, my plan is always to come up to NY a week or so before the Passover Holiday. This year, that means leaving here for the drive up, on March 29th. My daughter is insisting i not come to NY, and just stay down here. Not sure what i will do, but i know there are worse places to be stuck than where i am.
I do have appointments set up mid April with my RO for follow up. Wouldn't mind missing that either ;-)

Quite reasonable, IMO. An "abundance of caution" cuts many ways; we've all witnessed excessive medical procedures at times, around here, just to be cautious.Usually covered by insurance ;-)

I just canceled my 8 hour round trip to Atlanta for my younger brother's funeral service. If he "notices", I am sure he will understand.

Merlefest is now officially cancelled. They are offering three options for ticket-holders 1) convert tickets to a tax-deductible donation to the college; 2) convert tickets to next year tickets; 3) get a refund.

My wife and I will donate our ticket fees and then buy new tickets for next year when they go on sale in the fall. Wilkesboro Community College will have already spent quite a bit of money on this year's festival, and who knows what they may be obligated for under contracts with performers, stage and lighting vendors etc. My guess is many of the performers won't press for whatever payment they may be technically due. Some performers - Sam Bush, Peter Rowan, and others have been there since the original memorial concert for Merle Watson in 1988 and are were close friends with the Watson family. This and other cancelled festivals to follow has to be a big hit for all of the performers who make a substantial part of their annual income on the summer festival circuit.

As of tonight, my community’s clubhouse and Fitness Center is officially closed. All shows cancelled. Indoor dining room to cafe closed. Cafe still open.

We where due to fly from Ontario, Canada to San Diego for 3 weeks the start of April. Spoke to my brother-in law and have decided to postpone the trip for another time.

My mom is in a home up in the great white north here and in Ontario they have stopped all visitation. She has a phone so we can stay in touch that way. The nurse mentioned to call anytime for updates on my mother.

We are staying in for the most part as so much is cancelled, but will travel to Florida late month for my mother in law’s 91st birthday. She lives on her own and we have deferred moving her to an assisted living facility at the present time.

Got an email from my PCP group this morning, a large group with a dozen offices and a hundred docs. My location has built out a specific testing area. They said if a person is symptomatic to call and then come in. They have plenty of tests and a 12 hour result turnaround. They have tested several,hundred with no positives. My county is 200,000 in population and has no infections currently. Each adjacent county has one.

what a great gesture. I haven't been on this thread for a week and wow how things have changed. i'm going to Yosemite for a couple of days tomorrow. probably the last overnight trip for awhile.

Hal, the restaurants In that area have hundreds of tons of perishable food they can not serve now. What did the governor announce will be done? Is the state going to buy the food from all these basically small and ultra small businesses and then set up ways to prepare and serve to others? If the restaurants are closed where will the food be prepared? Most of this food is bought on credit. My son has a 70 seat steakhouse. At any time has about $10,000 of prime beef in the fridge. Such a shutdown would be financially tough as they are only in their second year of business.

Sound to me like he should have a plan where restaurants continue to prepare food and it gets delivered to shut ins and those in need paid for by the state. Costs of the businesses should be covered. Otherwise you are going to see a huge amount of food go to waste, low income workers out of work and businesses ruined. Remember, unemployment doesn’t cover business owners and partners, contract labor and very little for those that rely on tips. Rents, utilities taxes permits all have to be paid when the business is closed. How are these costs going to be borne? If the state doesn’t have a plan they will be flooded with law suits particularly if this virus is not as bad as some are speculating.

What happens if a restaurant doesn't follow the “request and recommendation”? In my opinion, the State either takes financial responsibility or it doesn't make such action. To me it reeks of the very totalitarianism we have fought against. Tell businesses what they have to do and also they have to cover the losses. Not good in my opinion. I know these are troubling times and actions have to be taken, but our officials cant just be dictators they have to be leaders. This same governor will probably support bail out provisions for PA big businesses at taxpayer expense because they have the political clout the small businesses cant afford to exert.

Jack, The phrase that came to mind was first uttered by Spiro Agnew back in the day....written by his speechwriters (was it Buchanan or Safire?): Pusillanimous *****footer. Either give the order, or don't. It's a perfect example of non-leadership. Which we have way too much of (Non-leadership).
