..... for the current worldwide numbers for total cases, deaths and recoveries: Cases: 905,279; Deaths: 45,370; Recovered: 180,756.

They indicate that deaths as a percent of all resolved cases - as a percentage of deaths plus recoveries - is *****20%*****.

This is a far cry from what Dr. Fauci has been telling us, of around 1%.

Of course 20% is probably an exaggeration, since the deaths likely occur perhaps a week to ten days after symptoms first appear, while clear evidence of recovery may be delayed, perhaps twice as long. So there are cases which currently are on their way to recovery that are not yet counted. Nevertheless, it looks like the eventual death rate will be far higher than 1%. Maybe 10%, if we are lucky.

I doubt that it will come anything near 10%. Most cases are not even caught via testing, so the real case fatality rate is likely to be below 1%, unless you are talking about certain ages, or those with preexisting conditions.

That's crazy about Rikers. I imagine every large-to-medium size jail in the country will be like that. Imagine getting popped for not paying a jaywalking ticket that went to warrant, getting sent to a big city jail, and coming out with corona. Yikes.

what does china have to do with the U.S. at this point unless you are trying to establish an alibi? I think they lied and I think our intelligence services have always known the true numbers.

Whether china is lying or telling the truth really doesn't matter a lot. If we have anything close to 100,000 (or twice that or more) deaths in the US, that will be the biggest civil disaster in the last 100 years. It will have massive, long term consequences.

After doing business with China for 20 some years, you learn the China culture of white lies is accepted and understood, and if you miss the lie its your fault not theirs. Also they don't / won't say no. It's truly a very very different culture and hard for America to comprehend. That being said, the people can be the most generous and polite people you can be around. Much of that culture is very beautiful, but the winds blow very different there.

Regarding getting accurate facts concerning this virus. China is run by a One party - Communist - Authoritative Government. It's like a gang that can and will do anything to keep in power. They will try to portray themselves as good, and you better agree they are good. Pride is another big thing in China. Having an out of control anything in China not only hurts the ruling parties pride but also threatens their power. They feel they need to portray control and harmony. All is well....

If they are misrepresenting the dangers of this virus to the extent possible we may see a historical uprising against the ruling powers. In the past, control was possible because of the lack of easy information and they could remove anyone that was disrupting the harmony or was challenging them. I feel they are playing those same cards today, but the virus is playing a very different game and cannot be controlled in the same way.

......on another note; I sent well wishes to a close friend in China in early February and followed up a few weeks later asking how things are going and when the factories were going to open. His response sounded scripted to me and was not written in his style. The next day I got an email from some company I never heard of and they talked about how China is quickly recovering, virus cases across the country are near zero except for Wuhan, they will be stronger than ever, people are happy - very happy...happy happy.. etc. etc. It sounded like a promotion for a vacation. Was this truly random or did me asking about the status of the country trigger an official Government response. I've done this too long and believe in the latter.

The one thing they did right early on was to aggressively shut down the country for weeks. Time and factory output will tell all, we will see..... PS: my orders keep getting bumped forward?

Most of the above anti-China sentiment, from various forum friends, is totally untrue about China. We Americans are fed a steady dose of propaganda, from our media, and our leaders, about the country. It isn't the dictatorial nation people say it is. Far from it.

As far as the US intelligence community story goes Ed: did you also believe the intelligence community about the Vietnam War? We're both old enough to remember that directly. I missed going only because the draft ended. Plenty of my friends, who were older, went. Some didn't come back. Some came back missing parts. Lives were ruined. We were lied to. How about our wonderful intelligence community about Iraq? Did you buy that one too Ed? They lied. Now they want to tell us about China. No thanks. You can believe it if you like. Be my guest. I find it highly amusing that you just said the government lied about masks protecting us yesterday but are standing up saluting about their take on China.

China locked down, wore masks, are still wearing masks, and they've controlled the virus. We took the opposite approach, and we are out of control. We are #1 on the world for COVID-19 cases, and deaths. That is something I didn't want to be #1 at. Sure the "intelligence community" (no one named, you just accept it because.... gosh, who knows? they'd never lie right?) tells you China covered it up, zillions of Chinese are dead, blah blah blah - that is just to make you feel good when you see what is happening all over our country.

We were told not to wear masks, by our government, because we don't have enough masks, not because they don't work. They do work. They save lives. Let that sink in.

mattam: hear hear. Guys, just stop it. I think the end of day answer is that here in the US--because of who we are, and how it works here which we mostly appreciate, the likely infection rate and death rate will be quite a bit higher than elsewhere in the world. Having the system we have has significant upsides comparatively--but there are downsides, and this is one. There really isn't a mechanism for singular executive control of the population--and the population will not instantly fall into doing what they are told. Never has been true, and never will be. And that is usually thought to be a good thing.

As has been mentioned previously, the moderators have all agreed that under the circumstances, we are going to a bit looser on the rules than usual. Clearly, a little leeway is in order, and in my view, while this is a support forum for PCa patients and families, it’s also a medium that allows us all to be connected. And that is sooo important right now, with so much of the nation on lockdown.

With that said, it would be much appreciated if we could all make an effort to not let these Threads veer into blatant political conversations.

While the level of transparency in China is clearly very important issue right now, as it relates to CV. But at some point the discussion gets very political. That’s what we’d like to avoid.

Thanks Prat - agree 1000%. In the interest of harmony, I also asked our forum friends to not get political, but if some can't exercise restraint, then they will have to be answered. I hope the China-bashing stops now. We're all in this together, every country, and every person. Let's act like it.

The world has gone mad. It wasn't like that when we were coming up. Sure, we did crazy things, but threaten doctors?

I went to Publix today for our weekly shop. My turn at risk. I would say 10% had masks on; there were even a couple of full pull down clear welder's type masks. This was up from a VERY few people a week ago. I predict 25% by this time next week. I wore the N-95 that I dug out of my painting supplies and must admit I psychologically felt safer (and probably was). I still practiced proper social distancing...

My take...if you have a mask or can make a mask...wear it!

I think we've always had whack jobs out there, but in the pre-internet era they were lone wolves and didn't really have any efficient ways to get out their message. Now they can not only do that, they can seek each other out, which builds their message even more.
