1st 3 Month Lupron Shot

So, I just had my first 3 month shot of Lupron. My first shot was a 30 day dose. Should I expect any different side effects? So far, it has just made me tired and have a low appetite. I lost 5 lbs, so that is good. Radiation starts in a month.

Of course the first shot was only 30 days to see if you have a bad reaction. I would not expect the three month shot to give side-effects above the short shot. It's possible your side-effects could increase over time simply from being on ADT longer.

FWIW the ADT side-effects haven't been a major issue for me so far.

I find that my hot flashes are almost as frequent as the newscasters saying "breaking news".

Had 6 months of Firmagon. No issue with hot flashes until mid point then different story.

The longer you are on Lupron the worse things get.

along with the hot flashes ....you will GAIN weight ....in my case I really enjoyed the extra weight being 140Lbs...lol....and of course a little extra in the man boob area ....went up to 165 that really felt good to me ....no fatigue ....hot flashes the worst in my case ....good luck with it all....David .... I encourage you to take the dire predictions with a grain of salt. My side-effects have been quite tolerable after a year into it. I started walking - now four miles per day 4x per week. I've lost 30 pounds and am near ideal weight. I also do one set of push ups each day to mitigate boobs. No sign of boobs yet.

I'm not saying you won't have significant side-effects, but it's not a given. Good luck!

So far Lupron and Casodex are not playing well with my body. I am very tired most of the time. My left hip that does have some sports injuries and arthritis is in constant pain. I also got a rash from the Casodex. I hope I am only on ADT for 6 months. Thanks for all of your help!

Based on what I’ve heard and read on this forum, everyone reacts differently, as others have written here already in response to your post. I feared the worst when I began my six month course of Lupron and virtually all of my fears were unfounded. Good luck to you.

Had my pre-brachytherapy one time 3 month Lupron shot back in 2010. Still remember the hot flashes, stayed in a BAD mood for the entire month also remember balls/nuts shrinking to the size of jelly beans. I had heard of other guys with the testicle shrinkage but others have also indicated that they do return to normal size in a short time. Received my HD brachytherapy at age 73 and I’m still kicking coming up on 84 this year.

I was on ADT for just over three years. The most effective actions I took to combat and minimize the side effects were:

Stay active. When I was moving I was not affected. Hot flashes were worst when sedentary or asleep. Go outside and enjoy spring, just social distance.

Revise diet. Alcohol and caffeine brought on hot flashes. Cold water and green tea were useful. Reduce red meat intake and surgars and fats. Increase fruits and vegetables. We made every meal one half salad with lemon juice for dressing. When hungry for a snack get a bottle of water and go for a walk.

Stay sane. A lot of it is mental. Stay positive, engaged, listen to music, watch an informative documentary etc. keep your mind engaged on positive subjects and mental exercises. Don’t complain about the side effects, rather find ways of laughing at them. Remember a lot of people have it far worse. Many are on ventilators due to Covid-19. Some have cancelled surgeries like my college roommate that has a very nasty case of sinus cancer with no word on when he will begin treatment. Keep your situation in proper proper perspective. It won’t last forever.

So when feeling bad, just take a walk with a cold bottle of water while you listen to your favorite music. Combine these three actions and it will greatly reduce the side effects. Worked wonders for me.

Fran, I’m not sure if I can add too much to the discussion, but here are my thoughts. The first 30 day injection had zero side effects for me too. It wasn’t until the second three month injection that things got exciting. And now I’m on my second round of ADT and it is different than the first. More and hotter flashes, weight gain and my grapes are barely raisins.

But don’t let that discourage you. I know the side effects will go away after the ADT is stopped. If you have really bad side effects, let your oncologist know. They have ways of mitigating them. And all the side effects in the world are better than the alternative.
