There is a perspective that says that Covid-19 is just a variant of the seasonal flu, and that it will pass as usual. And since there are 30-50K deaths per year from the seasonal flu, all the current goings on are unnecessary and pointless and a waste.

our doctors are not saying that, tho. and it's not the just the U.S. that is locked down. so arguing the reality of the situation will avail us nothing.

IMO the big difference between this and the seasonal flu is that covid is transmited much easier. It means that the health system has to deal with a higher number of serious cases not just over the winter but in a MUCH SHORTER period of time of a few weeks. It results in a collapse.

In my part of LA County, they're reporting that the ER at local hospitals are eerily quiet as of now. People are staying away from the ER if they don't really have to go, which is great. However, the ICUs are starting to fill up with patients. As I understand the Navy ships, they're supposed to take the non-covid patients. Peak demand in California is projected to be April 26...

Just my perspective as a healthcare provider with many colleagues in the field who are seeing multiple deaths daily:
COVID-19: No vaccine - No Treatment - No Immunity individual or Herd
Flu: Vaccines and antiviral treatments, individual immunity for some
Flu Mortality - 0.1% COVID-19 Mortality - 1-3% and some regions are seeing higher 4-5%
Flu Burden Death Estimate for 2019-2020 season 24K-63K
COVID-19 Death in US to date: 9171 with a predicted count of 100K-200K total (number will never be totally reflective due to undiagnosed cases)
Only strategy for prevention - distancing and handwashing

At the end of the day there are lies, darn lies, and statistics. We can choose wisely or choose poorly.
We may never know if what we are being asked to do was too much, but we will definitely know if we didn't do enough.

new york has no shortage of beds but they do have shortage of medical staff and ventilators.
