Was Koufax (also known as "God's left arm") the mystery pitcher? This statistics thread, which has turned in the direction of sports, has brought back so many terrific memories. Ah, George Brett. And even though I grew up in in Detroit, the Chicago Cubs' Ernie Banks, was also a hero of mine.

OK, here's a hint: the pitcher with the incredible stats I quoted was the most dominant NL pitcher in the year of the Pitcher. The one who beat him with a no-no was well known for lubricating the baseball.

You guys got both of them. PDL: Gibson gave up 11 home runs that year. In 300+ innings. Seriously?

Oh, and the day after Perry no-hit St Louis, Ray Washburn for StL no-hit the Giants. First (and only?) time that has ever happened.

1991 MN Twins - pitcher Jack Morris, World Series, 7th game, 1-0 win in 10th inning pitching all innings. Best pitching performance I can remember. Coach Tom Kelly tried to pull him and he would not go. Bob Gibson was great and Ernie Banks was Mr. Cub, says it all.

Google "greatest game ever pitched":

Early 60's (way before pitch counts), Warren Spahn vs Juan Marichal at Candlestick. 16 innings, 0-0 until Willie Mays hits a walkoff home run in the bottom of the 16th.

Or maybe Harvey Haddix and his perfect game until he lost it in the 14th inning.

For me, in recent history, Chris Carpenter vs Roy Halliday, game 5 NLDS in 2011. Halliday: 1 run, 6 hits, Carpenter: 0 runs, 3 hits.

Gibson struck out 35 Tigers in '68 Series including 17 in Game 1 (Kaline 3 times). But my Tiges prevailed in Game 7. Some of these old games are being shown on TV now. I think I'll go check on stats from the '84 Tigers. I won't share here but they did start 35-5. Amazing.

The '68 series was one of the best of all time. Bob Gibson was an incredible pitcher. It is nice that MLB is broadcasting old games to sustain us during the drought ("There are two seasons: baseball season and the void.")
