Unfortunately, I have a significant notch in my audiogram, thanks to many years working in power plants in the days when wearing hearing protection was for sissies. I actually remember my first supervisor telling me that "that ringing in your ears will go away after a while".

Sigh.

For shear breadth of rock music my favorite has to be the Eagles. In the small world category, a founding member of the Eagles. Don Felder, also founded a band I used to listen to in high school which was The Continentals. It also included Stephen Stills and another Eagle, Bernie Leadon eventually replaced Stills along side Felder. Felder also taught guitar at a local music shop to a young kid named Tom Petty!

For depth however I really like Jackson Browne. I don't care for some of his songs but I could (and did) listen to "Running on Empty" and "Stay" for hours...

Eagles the penultimate 70s band, loved them.
Lynyrd Skynard, yes, yes, yes

But, although his life and career were tragically cut short, my all time favorite is Jim Croce. Love songs, songs of the road, honky tonk, just my favorite. He was a great story teller also. I never saw him in concert, just performances later that had been recorded. My 14 year old heart sunk the day I got the news of the plane crash.

My late teens and early 20s coincided with the "great folk music scare" of the 1960s so I spent a lot of time back then in the coffee houses of Boston and Cambridge. That kind of started me down the wayback trail after it dawned on me that much of what people were were performing in those places were covers or interpretations of older or different music than I heard on the AM car radio. So thanks to the Paul Butterfield band I found out about Little Walter and Howlin' Wolf. And thanks to Dave Van Ronk I found my way to Rev. Gary Davis, etc. These days, much of what I listen to is singer/songwriters like Iris DeMent, Jimmy LaFave, Cliff Eberhardt, or groups that write and arrange new music built on old traditions like the Carolina Chocolate Drops, or The Steel Wheels. Just as an example here is a clip of the Steel Wheels - they always include an a capella number in their set

Tudpock - I was listening to James Gang long before Joe Walsh joined the Eagles if you want to take it a step further. Just put them on for a little Funk 48 and 49...

Wow talk about the good old days I lived in Michigan as a young teenager used to love it when we could get WLS out of Chicago on our am radio. I'm not a big country music fan but watched Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson special on A&E last night just fun to watch the music ability that these Artists had and still do. Kenny Rogers will be on tonight. My 1st wife was a big country fan so we went to quite a few concerts.

We could pick up WLS AM at night outside of Rome, GA, for me between 1963 and 67! Unless you are a lot younger(or older) than me, we might have been listening to the same station at the same time!

Beethoven's 9th? I mentioned it earlier.....For an interesting take on it, look for a movie called "copying beethoven" starring Richard Harris as the Maestro.

Last year my wife and I attended the Philadelphia Orchestra where they remembered the Philadelphia Orchestra's participation in Disney's Fantasia. Does it make me a philistine if I can't listen to The Rite of Spring and not see Disney's visuals?

Anybody remember PDQ Bach? Concerto for Horn and Hardartt? Concerto for piano vs. orchestra? Grand Serenade for an awful lot of winds and percussion?

Sky, BBob - Growing up in the Chicagoland area in the 60's, WLS was joined by WCFL as the two competing Top 40 radio stations in the area. Everyone had two preset buttons on the radio for them that got worn out every time a bad song started. At some later point, both changed formats as part of the many ownership changes in the radio industry and/or the whims of management. FM Stereo was also killing AM radio locally. WLS may be talk radio today. Thanks for that memory.

I went to college with the son of a Chicago DJ, HE had the most incredible record collection ever. Boston was a great album, agreed. Bohemian Rhapsody is in the top 10 all time songs. And what college sports team didn't adopt We Will Rock You-We are the Champions as their theme music in 78-79?

Boston was a great album, the product of basement recording, overdubbing, and mixing by Tom Scholz. I seem to recall the big question being if the music could be actually played live which took some him time but finally got done. Was too popular and overplayed so much that I only listen to once in a while now, still a great album that goes on tomorrow’s Pandemic playlist.

Ooops. I missed your ref to the 9th. Another movie associated with that work is Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange".

If you haven't tried it I recommend The Met Live in HD - live performances of the Metropolitan Opera on the big screen, including great backstage interviews between acts. This season my wife and I went to Akhnaten, Porgy and Bess, and Agrippina. Judging by the amount of gray hair there are more than a few prostate patients in the audience.

I'm gratified to see people who appreciate classical music here. I was just tipping a toe in the water music with my post of course. And don't get me started on jazz, because I can't (get started, that is).

Glenn Gould is a god to me. Though a minor deity when compared with Bach.

Halbert: even though I come from a deeply musical family, Fantasia at the age of 7 or whatever was likely my first introduction to Le Sacre, too. It was only later that I found out that it had nothing to do with dinosaurs, and years after that that I had the thrill of actually playing in it. And we all loved PDQ Bach - genius stuff from Peter Schickele, who I see is still hale and hardart at age 84. Who can forget Iphigenia in Brooklyn?

Billy - you must have better ears than I, Gunga Din! But yeah, good old Johann Sebastian and likely Wolfgang too would doubtless wince at today's pitch. To say nothing of wondering where the heck they were of course.
