I realize this is anecdotal evidence, but certainly seems to suggest that masks work.

Took a ride to Long Beach, just to get out, walk on the boardwalk. Long Beach is out on Long Island (not NYC) and you need to buy a day or season pass to get onto the actual beach. Unlike past years, the purchase of a pass is restricted to residents of the City of Long Beach, so the beach itself was not overcrowded, despite perfect weather, everyone was spread out. But the boardwalk itself was filled with lots of people. I would say about 75% of them were not wearing masks. A sign of things to come, in the form of virus numbers going in the wrong direction? I wouldn't be surprised.

We were just too uncomfortable, so we left after about 15 minutes. Its a shame.

My biggest fear is the Zombie apocalypse. That would be much worse than COVID.

Masks work best when everyone wears masks. Here in our part of upstate NY the “mask line” is still holding. Very busy at the supermarket today, more shoppers, baskets full as they have been since restaurants closed, every person was masked. Same at a very busy Home Depot yesterday. Yet I read reports of thousands unmasked and not distanced today in bars in the City and the Hamptons? So NY is no monolith. My personal belief is risk is relatively small in the outdoors, rises considerably indoors, and is highest in dense settings indoors. Also most indoor spaces are now climate controlled. I cannot imagine a more efficient way to circulate a virus? I also believe that this virus will be “around” for the rest of my life, and that Americans will continue to suffer and die disproportionately because of cultural attitudes more than medical reasons. Stay safe all.

I have a very good friend that moved to FL. He has sent me numerous pics of bars/etc and almost no one wears a mask or does any form of social distancing in the are he lives in.

Looking at those pictures it looked like maybe 2/3 of the people were wearing masks? Even if everyone was wearing a mask I'm sure that being in close proximity with so many people raises infection risk, but I also have to believe that the risk could be reduced if *everyone* was wearing a mask.

Somewhat off topic, but if infections go up I've read that a perverse benefit is that it will make testing the potential effectiveness of a vaccine easier when they're doing large scale human trials since the test subjects are likely to be exported to more virus.

I didn't want to start a new thread on Covid-19, as it seems we've plenty so...

I saw today that several states had record new cases, and are approaching the point where ICU capacity will be breached, and are therefore talking about delaying elective surgeries.

My wife had a doctor appointment today - she went in fully masked, with a face shield visor as well. Everyone on the doctor's office was masked. I will continue to delay my yearly PSA - it was due in June. My PSAs have been fantastic for many years now post-brachy, and last year's was the lowest ever - still, it gnaws at the back of my mind.

Florida seems to be exploding. 5500 new cases today, the previous high was 3300 on June 18th. And still, no measures to slow down reopeining. I get that we can't just shut down the country forever. But look at whats going on. around us.

The Governor of Arizona didn't have the guts to mandate masks. He did give the okay for local governments to decide, after much haggling with mayors from the larger cities. Thankfully Tucson's mayor has been requiring masks since Saturday. It will be interesting to see what the compliance is, and the appetite for enforcement.

Prato, it's probably good that you left FL when you did. Yesterday, with some irony, the Governors of NY, NJ, CT starting requiring 14 day quarantines for guests from the COVID-heavy states like FL. In addition to our FL cases sky rocketing, hospitalizations are up as are deaths. The average age of new cases is now in the 30's so that gives solace to our governor...who evidently does not understand that some of these young people will eventually come into contact with older Floridians with potentially dire consequences.

The sad fact is that mask wearing and social distancing have become politicized so that lots of folks here think things are pre-pandemic normal. Too bad because much of this new wave might have been moderated with some common sense precautions...

The respected John Hopkins University and Medicine website is tracking many data points, including the 3-day moving average by state. Several states have experience a surge, but are on the way back down. Don't panic. Yet. Arizona is currently the hot-spot, not Texas. And it changes constantly.

Caleb, thanks for that web site...I will bookmark it. Unfortunately though, as good as JHU is, the data on the web site is a couple of days old. So to say Texas is not a hot spot is incorrect. Yesterday, Texas, California and Florida all recorded record numbers of cases for COVID-19. Worse yet, at least for Florida, the 7 day moving average for both hospitalizations and deaths is heading in the wrong direction. I'm not panicking but I am hoping for some adult leadership in my state so that our residents start following some common sense health policies rather than assuming the pandemic is over.

Here in California, our 7-day average of new cases increased 47%. Our testing numbers have been relatively flat, greater percent testing positive. I was hoping we'd have a bit of a break during the summer, but it's sure not looking that way.

Here in Hawaii on TV ads...you would never know there was a pandemic...they advertise the summer activities as if everything was fine(ex samples..,brazenly advertising corona beer nary a distance tween....taking the whole family to local water parks)...lucky..the local population is having nothing to do with it...we are wearing masks...social distancing to a fault...yes that is possible in any activity performed...key word that...performed...even jesus performed/performance…..miracles...it is ok to name folks real or mythical still in America I think?...oh and myths have always exceeded the real in truth imo...Oh stop it...get real... sticky wicket...whot?

Texas and Florida have now re-closed bars, and restricted restaurants, and other businesses; Arizona is telling everyone to stay home. I wonder what that 69-year old Lt. Gov., who famously said he would "take a bullet for the team" re: get corona, and that grandparents (or, at least himself) were willing to die for the economy, as long as we could leave everything open, will say now?

2020 has been a hell of a year. What next?
