Blood in urine the start of some new?

7 years out from the ole triple play, all going well, never happened before, bright red blood my urine. Don't have any pains or other symptoms. ah I mean, unusual pains. Happened twice today, later in the day all clear? Since I had ADT brachy and external beam, any possibility it's related. I am hoping it is, as opposed to something else causing it that could be worse. Getting old, not for the faint of heart

My primary care has been ordering my yearly PSA's, but is otherwise useless, haven't been to my urologist in a few years. Not related to this episode, but last time I called,I've been bumped back new patient status and would have to wait 6 months for an appointment. Can't imagine now with Covid

Maybe run it by the ole "out of network" RO, see what he recommends

Another Triple Play guy here...I would also contact the RO. Besides the difficulties of getting in with your uro, I think he would also have a better handle on it--at least if it's related to the radiation and not some other cause.

I'm also seven years out from my radiation, so I'll be very interested in what your RO says.

A urologist will do a cystoscopy to look into your urethra and bladder to make sure everything is OK.
You can make an appointment now and wait since no more blood is seen. Perhaps it is just a one time deal but its better to catch it early for whatever it is.
I also had a triple play but developed a serious urethra stricture issue, not all that common but urologists refer to RT as the gift that keeps on giving even years after the treatments.

The blood may have nothing to do with the radiation treatment, especially as it was primary treatment on your prostate rather than salvage treatment after the prostate is removed. Much different.

I am 9&1/2 years out from radiation (brachytherapy and IMRT), like you. I have never had any negative treatment side effects after the radiation therapy was complete. I have never had any bleeding, or any other urinary issues. My Urologist always asks about changes, but has often said he does not expect any issues based on his experience of several thousand primary treatment radiation patients.

However, I suggest you don’t take the situation likely and do recommend you re-establish an urologist relationship.

Totally agree with CaliJR. I had the same issue was told that it was most likely radiation side effects. Went on for more than a week. Got in to see my uroligist and after scope determined I had bladder cancer. It is worth the cystoscopy just for piece of mind.

I too have been dealing with gross hematuria. Starting March 30 about half of my voidings had pink or red drops in them. April 2 my Uro did a cystoscopy and reported white scar tissue on bladder neck and minimal radiation changes to bladder, she also found a UTI, but I did self-cath once a day. Continued to see colored red and small dry clots for next 6 weeks.

May 14 started with a red stream and next 5 days more blood in urine and dry and fresh clots, always able to empty bladder, blood and urine tests showed low platelets -130.000 and a 2nd UTI. CT Urogram done May 22, final results not posted until June 9, showed no kidney stones, no bladder cancer, but no source of bleeding.

June 4 started great, did 2 small jobs on the farm, walked 1/2 mile to get the mail, found letter from Sanford says my Uro was leaving and all appointments after June 19 are cancelled. She was the one who found my cancer and guided me through all related problems. Very next voiding was a bright red stream and after that nothing but a few drips and drops so on my way to ER in the system where my Uro works. 5 1/2 hours of hardly any voiding, Switchboard did not inform Uro and took 2 hours till ER Dr informed her I was in ER, so no answers that day except for a 3rd UTI. Tried everything to get an appointment or phone call from Uro - no luck, her nurse did call every day to check on me but that is as far as I got.

June 11 I got an appointment with CNP in Urology at the competing hospital to set up as new patient. Good thing too, June 18 afternoon starts with a red stream and then nothing, did self-calf but had large clots plug catheter then nothing. Fast trip to ER at new hospital, 11 hours of drips, drops, and squirts. about midnight I finally get water and a pain suppository and half hour later could self-cath and get some relief, only thing found was a 4th UTI.

June 25 had a new URO briefly go over May 22 Urogram ( first person to do that ) told me with kidney stone and bladder cancer ruled out he wasn't really concerned about source of blood, I sure as heck was and still am. I will not be seeing that Uro again, only 1 more left to try in town of 30,000.

Have any of you had a cystoscopy done during a time of active bleeding or when flow was almost at zero ?

I have been doing Taxotere since March 30, 5th session was to be June 22 but Dr felt I was too weak and did #5 June 29.

I know this is not an uncommon topic on such a forum. That said...

It’s not all that uncommon even with People that have never had any radiation at all nor ill health in their lives. I’ve had it. My mom had some episodes. A goodly portion of people can have this. And many times no reason is ever found for it. THAT said...

I have been away for a while and just saw this thread.

A number of months ago I started seeing blood in my urine and it only increased over time. 2 trips to the hospital as blood clots blocked my ability to urinate. I had been in touch with my URO and he scheduled a Cystoscopy. Afterwards he stated that my bladder looked like a bomb had gone off inside. That left me a little shaken to say the least. It would seem that the radiation I had received 3 months after my surgery had waited 10 years to rear its ugly head.

There was talk about bladder removal and placement of a Urostomy bag. So once again I started research here on HW. I found a few discussions about Hyperbaric OxygenTherapy to resolve the issue. So I discussed it with my URO and arranged for treatment. I completed a total of 60 treatments. At about treatment 31 I had pretty much stopped bleeding. I would see and occasional pink tinge but nothing like before. By treatment 40-45 I had stopped bleeding altogether. I did the 60 treatments with a Supra Pubic cath in place. I finished my treatments about 2 months ago. I still have the SP cath in place while I work to retrain my control.

This site and the wealth of info shared here resulted in my keeping the bladder that has been with me for 72 years. Sure want to keep it a lot longer. My best to you.

Last year I was told that there was blood in my urine (microscopically). I have never saw any. We did the scope of the bladder and uretha and everything looked normal. My mother, sister and niece have all had the same thing. Hereditary I guess.

Progressing: I suspect you are right. It's probably an after effect of your radiation. It's pretty common, even years out. Your RO will probably suggest you see your urologist about it, out of an abundance of caution, but there is every reason to expect it won't be anything worrisome.

Robotic surgery 5/2012. Gleason 9. T 7 mets. IMRT and now on IADT with Xtandi. PSA 0.29. 12/23 noticed painless hematuria. Stains my Depends. Forced fluids and now clear urine for 48 hours. History of stones x 3. Urologist feels I have radiation cystitis. Will force fluids for 7 days then ultrasound and then cystoscope. Blood looks like past stones but painless is new. Painless makes me feel it is radiation cystitis. I am a 84 yo Internist.

As with Wooglin and Italanat8, my hematuria resolved itself after (maybe because of?) increased water intake. Urologist confirmed with urinalysis but will follow up with blood test,CT, cytoscopy (yuch).
