Covid-- difference between shots 1 and 2?

I heard that there was an Israeli study that found two doses of the Pfizer vaccine (and I would think the very similar Moderna also?) confers immunity from asymptomatic transmission of the virus. This is very good news: those vaccinated, although staying healthy, won't be silently carrying and passing on the virus. It should mean the curves come down rapidly, provided we all take the known precautions for a few months longer.

Governors ending restrictions are doing so against medical advice (not that they requested any). That they are also lifting mask requirements is simply absurd, especially because businesses are saying they will take a hit either way. They will likely not regain a different customer base depending on whether they require masks or not.

You would think that these officials would be saying "OK, I'm lifting business closures, but we all still have to wear our masks for now."

Soon we will be swimming in vaccine...and then...everyone will have the same reaction...not to the vaccine itself...but to their reaction of the roll out of the vaccine....and no I will not say what that is....ahh spring...then summer...Tasman swells brewing and woe begons begin the beguine with smiles a stewing...

Wouldn't that be healthy. Our politicians, like our people of science, and many others, are great at making pronouncements, but sorely lacking in 'give-and-take communications', open minded listening, and developing consensus game plans.

I said "...starting up again" I played classical chamber music repertory (piano) with some string players (music teachers) regularly, about twice a month. We suspended because of Covid, but are looking forward to playing again when we all feel safe. Whether or not that means all 4 (or 5) of us have to be vaccinated remains to be seen. The key is the word "again" -- unfortunately with the repertory of piano trios, quartets, and quintets, it isn't the case that you can take up piano during Covid and then go out and play this stuff a year later. I've been working at it for some 60 years, alas.

Reminds me of that very old joke:

Patient: "Doctor, when my arm heals, will I be able to play the violin?
Doctor: "I don't see why not."
Patient: "That's odd, I've never played the violin."

Anyway, music is a fantastic hobby.

A related question: I have heard that Moderna #2 has worse SE than Pfizer #2. I reread the posts here. It might be true (very slight anecdotal comments) but so hard to say. Regardless, the SE seem VERY short-acting.

Does anyone have any real information on a comparison of SE??

I felt I'd been tumbling in a concrete mixer the morning after the Moderna #2 vaccination. By the end of the day, I felt no side effects.

At least for Moderna and Pfizer, their first and second shots are identical in composition -- only the body's response differ, the 2nd shot being a booster. I believe Dr. Fauci said antibody levels after the 2nd shot are 10x greater than after the first.

There is also in the works a T-cell Covid test. Our T-cells carry the information about the antigen long after our antibodies to it are depleted. I believe the test is to identify those who were exposed to Covid after their antibody levels drop.

My wife and I had Moderna #2 a week ago Wednesday. I had a sore arm for a day or two but she got hit with that plus explosive headaches, fatigue and red splotches on her arm (she had this last after shot #1 too).

Everything went away and we're looking forward to this coming Weds, when we'll be fully immunized against the strain of Covid that won't be prevalent any more! To say nothing of future variants.

Haven't been here in awhile, but can advise that I had Moderna shot#2 on Monday and approximately 24 hours later began feeling achy and very slight fever (99.6). Arm has moderate soreness. Today (Wednesday) feeling better but still a little lethargic. Shot#1 had no reaction whatsoever. No big deal considering the benefits (supposedly) of the vaccine.

My wife and have both had our second shots: hers was Pfizer and mine Moderna.
After the second shot, she felt lethargic and maybe a very slight fever for a day and a half, and soreness at the injection site
I had the Moderna second shot on Monday and all I experienced was the injection site soreness. I think some of the soreness is the result of a rather clumsy jab by the pharmacist. We walked two and half miles that afternoon, and again on Tuesday. Today, the weather isn't that great, so we'll probably not walk outside, but I've been cleaning the gutters and taking down the last of the Christmas decorations.
Meanwhile, my 65-year-old sister in Tennessee came down with the virus three days after her first shot. No connection there, just unfortunate timing. I doubt that ANYONE in the U.S. has been more cautious about isolating, yet somehow she developed COVID, as has her adult daughter and two grandchildren who are presently at their house. So far, they are holding up well. Her husband, who is 71, on the other hand, who had his first shot three weeks ago, has continued to test negative. Credit the vaccine, I think.

Update on my sister in Tennessee. Three days after her first shot, she contracted COVID...no idea how that happened. She and her husband live in rural Tennessee, have groceries delivered, haven't been in social settings. Yesterday she seemed to be improving. This morning, she's at the ER having difficulty breathing, can't eat, can barely swallow to drink, couldn't stand for her shower.
Fortunately, her husband, who is older and had his first shot several weeks ago, has tested negative, and her daughter and grandchildren seem to be on the mend.
Suddenly, this disease has touched my family's lives in a very serious way.

i know two brothers who just got the J&J vaccination. both said they developed flu-like symptoms later that day

1st Moderna 1/30 no issues 2nd Moderna 2/24. On morning of 2/25 woke to a fever of 101.6 degrees F. Took Tylenol, felt fine that afternoon took an observed fall in our kitchen. Wife heard the crash and found me unconscious on kitchen floor. Called 911 EMT’s took me by ambulance to local hospital then life flight to Pittsburgh for Trauma Hospital. Following several CT scans determined I had a severe concussion and with a couple of brain bleeds. Since I have no significant health issues the reason for the fall without warning was a vasovagel syncope event. A perfect storm of a low grade fever, a drop in BP and maybe a little dehydration from the Covid shot? In any event I recall nothing including the ambulance or helicopter ride several CT scans for time total of about 18 hours. I don’t know what I may have done different knowing what I do know but a word of caution don’t schedule much after the 2nd shot.

Currently recovering at home with headaches that are getting better. I have new respect for those suffering with concussion after effects. Feeling blessed that my fall happened at home and that we don’t have a harder kitchen floor.

oh man glad you're okay. i was sick and dehydrated a few years ago and passed out and cracked my head open on tire alignment machine. had to get eight staples in the scalp and diagnostics and ambulance totalled over $14k! as soon as i got IV water i felt like superman which made me realize how sick i had gotten.

This is beyond horrible! I wish you a speedy and full recovery, physically and mentally.

Thanks for the heads-up, Tim. I wasn't familiar with her playing, but I just checked out her website and that led me to a video of a web concert she and three members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestera gave just today of two piano quartets. By coincidence I've played both of them with my friends and have worked on them in a chamber music workshop I've attended during several summers! I'll listen carefully tomorrow and will also check out her books.

My wife had the J&J vaccine. By later that day, and all day the next, she felt as if she had been hit by a truck and didn't get its license number. She spent most of the time sacked out on the couch until dinner time on the next day.

I had Pfizer dose #1 this past Thursday. I had injection site soreness and just a bit of fatigue the rest of the day. I was fine the next morning.

I'll let you know how Pfizer #2 goes once I've received it.

I’m getting my first shot (Pfizer) on 3/16. That is the 2 week anniversary of the last series of radiation I had to my manubrium and lymph nodes deeper in my chest. RadOnc felt good about the angles and risks (very low) of affecting any lung or windpipe tissues. However, he said that fatigue and other SE’s could appear around the 2 week mark. Fatigue was early, got knocked down about 2 days ago. When I was getting the radiation, he said ideally don’t get vaccinated during radiation treatments but get it if I can get it.

Any reason I should avoid getting the vaccination at this time?
Normally, I’m youngish (54), fairly strong, decent shape before the last few months of complications. I don’t think I’ve had a cold and for sure no flu since being diagnosed with cancer. So I must be fairly hearty in general.

I’m asking the question because I’m nervous about it. That’s really not like me either. But, the last few months have made me more...... cautious.

Terry's Cellar --- I am thankful you are recovering! Thank you for thinking of us, by sharing your cautionary tale. We all need to be careful, in terms of falls. My oncologist has emphasized the importance of healthy hydration, to help maintain balance and mitigate dizziness. Hope this finds you feeling rested, restored, and recovered.

Gunner34 ---- We are in the same age bracket and have some commonalities in our treatment history. My humble thoughts --- a day of malaise, after receiving the vaccine, would be far better than contracting corona virus.

I have lost two "cancer comrades" our age to corona --- their immunity was compromised due to their diagnosis. The vaccine wasn't there in time for them.

My dad stands alongside us all here, as a fellow prostate cancer patient. Dad nearly died last August from corona, and was in a specialty hospital for two months, recovering from corona. He is a walking miracle.

His story has helped encourage everyone back in my hometown to get the vaccine ---- and he has now received the vaccine --- as a leukemia and prostate cancer survivor!

My personal feelings, based on these experiences --- many of us here already battle cancer --- I certainly don't want to have to battle corona virus, on top of that.

If you have any lingering doubts, send a quick question to your oncologist through your online patient portal.

I finished my second dose of the PFIZER vaccine last weekend. It gave me tremendous peace of mind.

I see my oncologist every month ---- he encouraged me to get vaccinated, as soon as it became possible. I have to believe your oncologist will share the same advice with you.
