Husband newly diagnosed

We are trying to soak up all the knowledge we can!
My husband, is leaning toward St. Louis, for surgery. Dr. Bahyani with Batnes Jewish Hospital. He was recommended to us as one of several by Dr. Epstein.
We are trying to get a virtual consult scheduled for this week. The travel to St. Louis seemed better to our location.
Anyone have any thoughts on Dr. Bahraini?

BWeaver—now reading and I too am from Oklahoma (in OKC). As I lurk here this is my first input, but these guys are great. I too recommend you visit one of the Centers of Excellence like MD, Mayo, Cleveland, etc. I did visit MD but decided on MSK (surgery) in NYC (no regrets!!). As I have traveled the world, going to NYC was just down the street per say. I think I have allowed you to “PM” me if you want to know details of my MD visit and my MSK surgery. Might search on a “GTO Guy” as he too is from Okla and did the trip to MD over a year ago

One thing I would recommend for the week or two after surgery is a good recliner. If you do not currently have one you can rent them.

BWeaver, fellow Okie here just went through where your at now about a year and a half ago. My URO was to young and fresh to consider him for surgery.
We as in wife and I also started with a Radiologist and Surgeon at the OU Cancer Center in OKC then when and talked to a Radiologist and a Surgeon down at MDA, very easy to set up appointments down there, and they have a group of people that just go over insurance coverage with you.
Ultimately everyone is different with a somewhat different diagnosis so I fully understand the difficult decision making progress for sure.
We ultimately decided on surgery with Dr. Davis who is very well known in the Prostate world, I think all he does is removals, and about 3 or so a day.

I am not in anyway suggesting what to do just sharing my experience.

Having surgery so far away was not easy and we stayed at the hotel MDAnderson provides for patients for recovery for 4 or 5 days before we headed home.
Recovery went well, pretty much dry from the time the cath came out, took about 6 or 7 months before any of my nerves started to wake up for erections even with pills. Did the shots at the 4 month mark and used them for a few months but they were painful for me and things by then were getting better. At about the 14 month mark things were working minimally again with no shots or pills except for the 20 mg daily sildenifil. At a year and a half out I am almost back to what I was before and would be happy right now even if things stayed the way they are now forever.

This forum was invaluable to me as it will be for you now that you found it.
I was pretty intimidated about going down to MDA but they have the process down so good they made it easy.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do and keep asking questions and you guys will come up with a plan that will work for you. Things get easier once you put a plan together.

Always good to hear from someone who's been there. I stumbled onto this forum thru a Google search. And you're right, it has provided a wealth of knowledge & support already.
Sounds like your recovery is going great!

If I may add a suggestion. I had the same surgery and am now in bio feedback rehab. My PT said doctors should have the physical therapy and rehab exercises BEFORE surgery and I wish I had known that. It really helps to get ahead on strengthening the pelvic floor muscles. If you can't get pre-surgery therapy, by all means start doing the Kegel exercises and walking to build up your muscles that control the incontinence problem. Just a suggestion. The actual surgery and recovery was very easy, but the incontinence is another issue. (For me)

For most, the catheter removal is a non-event. He should take some pads, or even a depends, to the appointment. It's not uncommon to leak uncontrollably for the first few hours. Especially since he needs to be pushing fluids for at least a few more days, to keep things flushed out.

Ask for a hard copy of the pathology report, and then transcribe it here, and we'll help translate.

After that, he needs to keep walking..more every day. Have a nice dinner. He should sleep well tomorrow night.
