Mel - OK, Medicare is as bad as PCa and we should never generalize, I get that. People interested in Medicare should have a Medicare biopsy done and post the results first, then we can divide into two camps and argue a lot
.
Some more info for those looking: My wife is a 25 year vet of the school system here (metro Twin Cites) and qualifies for 5 years of retiree health benefits. The district has a BCBS Advantage plan for retirees in the coverage area and a “N”supplement plan for those retired outside the area. They also will reimburse up to those amounts for other plans. The 2021 plan breakdown is:
BCBS Advantage -Medical $138 + RX $151 = $289/mo
Medicare N plan - Medical $181 + RX $151 = $332/mo
Why is the Part D drug part so high you ask? Tier 5 drugs have a $50 co-pay whereas the Part D plans that individuals can get are at best 25% co-pay for Tier 5. So let’s say you have to take a $10K/mo cancer drug then you pay $50, not $2,500 per month. This is where the big difference can be if one has the ability to get retirement insurance through a group plan. There are other benefits of group plans but this is the single biggest factor I have found.
That being said, most people do not have subsidized retirement plans anymore as they have faded away like pension plans. Those that grandfather into union, government, or big business plans are lucky as they are going away for most people. Also, living in in metro areas provides a lot more choices than those in more rural areas and greater competition.
